Re: No Bluebird houses next year - FED UP

I had around 80 pairs PM colony in my backyard also with two BB boxes. Your problem is why I put up BB boxes to keep them less interested in PM houses and gourds. I think rule on BBs boxes is 50 yards apart minimum? Which my wasn’t but the didn’t face each other. Maybe need to evaluate where BB hous...

Re: Closing Holes

Depends on how many PMs you have nesting? one or two I wouldn't PMs are are colony nesters and you would limit changes getting more or full housing. Course it you have no control over house sparrow or starlings you're going to struggle keeping them anyway cause IMO they will always be threat?

Re: May I please get help determining sexes

Adult PMs are easy to identify Males are all black with ultra violent glow while females have light colored breasts almost dirty white. Sys are little harder do to the spots, usually Sy males spot are more and start to fill in more quickly. looking at pictures at that distance I say they are adult P...

Re: Martins will not enter gourds

My question do you have starlings in that area? if you do then IMO you need srehs (crescents) protect PMs. The one checking out you're gourds maybe your neighbors that already chosen nest and just curious. IMO all you can do put housing up and hope you will get them eventually. IMO nothing wrong wit...

Re: Dead Martin in Gourd with Eggs

probably starlings, the have beak like sword and are natural born killers? If kill by starling should be able to see damage? PMs IMO can fight off sparrow but sparrow will sneak in and fill cavity with grass so PM can enter. at least that what I observed at my colony.

Re: Help with Owl Deterrents

IF. your having attacks at night most likely barred owls? IMO the only nest cavity that will protect against hawks and owls are L shaped completely hiding nest chamber. I specially designed and modified t14 stye Troyer housing to prevent owl and hawks from picking martins out and off housing. Hear p...

home made SREHS

OK, been 10 plus years since I had 80 plus pairs Purple Martin(PM) colony. I still think of PMs from time to time. I rarely see or hear PMs my area and when I do puts smile on my face. I used these SREHs for over 10 years at my location and they worked for me. If those who have ability to. make thei...

Re: New air rifle

This is a full magazine (7 shots) shot at 35 yards (distance from my house to martin housing). The bullseye on the target is 2 inches. I had one "flyer" if that is what you want to call it being that close. I read forum ever now and then use to have 60 cavity PM set up. Dusted off my 16 y...

Re: Hello from Mount Dora, Florida

No, not in the villages, Had large colony in Oklahoma for 18 years before we moved here. I only seen three small colonies in villages. One down by Fish Hawk Rec center, another down Canal Street close to Truman Rec center, and another of BV by Palmer's golf course, Rarely see any swallows up by Lope...

Re: Sparrows in New Houses!!

IMO if no martins are in the area yet keep the entry holes plugged, even then male English Sparrow (MES) will still lurk, when pm's arrive open couple of entry ways is site and position your house (if you have House) so you can see down the sides. There are several low powered pellet guns available ...

Re: My version of Troyer T16.

I'm the one in the picture of the Red 67 Ford F100. look in my albums you will see picture of the base plate first. IMO this style would work good way up north being wood insulated very good, and it's pretty much water tight with the Entry hole on the back side and the nest chambers up front.

My version of Troyer T16.

Two years before I moved I retired my old plywood T14 that I modified several times made T-16 Troyer style house, but I added all the features I had in mind. I took some Kenny Flecker house design, Troyer basic design, and added some of my own additions. First the house compartments are All L shaped...

Re: First two eggs pecked on the ground

My feeling it male English sparrow. Listen for his mate call, I bet he's somewhere close setting in tree, roof, or near by line calling for mate for the new cavity he just took over. If you seen English sparrow in the area recently you can bet it him.

Re: why do I have to login every so often!

most newer computers automatically defrag and do system clean up on scheduled time. if so it's probably deleting you cookie that contains your password allows you to not have to log on.
