Re: Heat Advisory Central TX

I wanted to share my heat related tragedy. I've been on vacation for the past 10 days and couldn't post this until now. This is my first year of Martins. I have (had) two nesting pair. In the S&K 12 family Purple Martin House on the west side I had an ASY pair with 4 pinkies. On the east side th...

Re: All these years

I was in a similar position as you earlier in the season. I had two pairs with nests built but no eggs. I put up the owl guard (around noon one day) and they quickly adjusted to it. I would put it up now. My original post: https://www.purplemartin.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=33251&hilit=Ow...

1st eggs ever!

Wow, I hadn't checked my nests in a few days. I have two Martin nests. One has 4 eggs and the other has 3.

Re: Wireless Live Wifi Camera

Then how could you make it live for everyone to see? Most the link somewhere? Kyler, Nest Cam allows you to stream the video via a link. Depending upon how far away your Martin house is from your house, the WiFi may not be strong enough. Since I you will have to run power to the camera there are op...

Re: Wireless Live Wifi Camera

Yes these type of cameras are live. You install an app on your phone and you can look 24/7 what is going on. The live feature is the reason they need WIFI. Most also record. The outdoor Nest Cams I looked at have the live and record feature.

Re: Wireless Live Wifi Camera

I have not used any of these personally. They appear they would work pretty easily as long as you could run power to them and they are in WiFi range. Search for "Foscam R2" That particular one is for indoor use. "Nest Cam" has some outdoor ones with possibly better features. Or j...

Re: Owl Scare – Need advice

20170518_175131_resized.jpg 20170518_175145_resized.jpg My Martins now have two full nests built, but still no eggs. I decided to get the owl guard up ASAP. I used 14ga 2X4" welded wire. I put the 4" on the horizontal direction so nest material can more easily be brought in. I cut an open...

Re: Unorthodox Location Leads to Success

I actually did put a gourd rack. During the time I wasn't for sure my birds were coming back, I was desperate. I bought a six pack of S&K gourds from my local chain farm and garden store after work one night. I couldn't find a suitable pole to mount them on that night so I bought some supplies a...

Owl Scare – Need advice

I’m a new landlord as of this year. My first ever Martins showed up May 1st. I was so excited. I spent countless hours reading about Purple Martins that day. I woke up early the next day well before daylight and decided I needed to play the dawn song to help my new guests feel welcome. I sat my iPad...

Unorthodox Location Leads to Success

I wanted to share my Purple Martin story. The house I grew up at as a kid had an unmanaged Purple Martin colony. The only management it got was cleaning nets out once a year, if that, on the three aluminum bird houses. They were all round entry holes and I remember House Sparrows and Starlings nesti...
