Re: Late Arrival

no worries....birds know when the proper time is. All these migrations are weather dependant and they will be here when the time is right. Each spring and different weather patterns, cant seem to base the returns from year to year.

Re: Newbie Here: Help me decide whether I have the yard for a Martin house

Got to try. Some people take years to get them. Central Georgia has many birds either staying around or flying thru. They can be picky but all you need is one to take notice and attract a mate. Up here in Canada (SW Ontario) I also was told I couldn"t attract martins at my heavily wooded site. ...

Re: Newbie Here: Help me decide whether I have the yard for a Martin house

Not all Martin colonies are posted on this site.... just old fashioned mom and pops and purist passions. I say no problem A beautiful site and open pretty well. I myself had an issue of being in a heavily wooded area with one large open area. I eventually got 5 pair before we moved. Do the dawn song...

Re: Year five wins and lessons learned

Way to go birdiegirl. A great season. My first full year at present house. S.W Ontario (Essex) Advertised the first week last August with 2 gourd racks. Many visitors then AND certainly paid off come late April. The 1 pair came April 25Th. and from then on a steady introduction. Either its pure luck...

Early spring arrivals at new place

we moved last summer and quickly put up our gourd racks to attract fledglings and other birds in the area....This spring (April 25th) I have 2 pair staying here and moved into 2 gourds and are constantly entering others. obviously are older pairs. Is it possible a nearby landlord is missing a few bi...

Re: Late season attracting after move

We moved about 30 kms away in the middle of the county (Essex). Not too many birds in the areas at my old site. neighborhood is getting built up and busy. I had 5 pair but new owners not into it. No worries about the small colony they can find new places surely. As for the new place (Gesto Ontario) ...

Late season attracting after move

A mid August move out further in the country. Rather tough to pack up after establishing a small colony at the old house but rather promising to see numerous Martins at the new site. Many MANY birds visiting my 2 racks I placed in the yard. I am playing the dawnsong and daytime chatter. Knowing thes...

Re: Tufted Titmouse

A pair of tufted titmouse in an almost full gourd rack. Also a house wren close by. perfectly behaved neighbors and funny thing I see them chase and badger the sparrows around. Absolutely no problems with sparrows. these guys pester them more than a "mother in law". Never hear the 'chirtle...

Hello, Im in SW Ontario just bordering Michigan. I started out about 5 yrs ago as I've always had an interest and as my father in law had a very healthy colony at his farm (2 gourd racks always full} I took interest very fast and thought I'd try. my home is situated in a wooded area BUT a open parce...

Re: Types of Tree leaves PM favor in your area?

Up north here. SW Ontario, I have a small amount of birds here but I have witnessed them going to the top of the tallest trees and collecting young leaves of Cottonwood, Oak of all kinds and the odd Beech. Lots of mature trees here and they have many to choose but they seemed fo favour the tallest t...

Re: Martins confused?

The last pair fledged 2 weeks ago. No rush to remove gourds yet. It was quiet for about a week but now I've got a few birds coming in every night and always seem To go in the same gourd. I presume it's the pair that either fledged from that gourd or parents. Every morning I get many birds (about 20)...

Re: All my martins are dying. Any advice?

That's too bad. Keep trying flipping crickets or eggs. My only pair came back and lured in some more. Looks like at least 4 pair now. A few weeks ago during a cold windy spell I flipped eggs and at first it seemed futile but all of a sudden the male attacked the offering. A few minutes later they we...

Re: Earliest SY male I’ve ever had

Got my pair back from last year back last week. Also have a single male that has been around from last year. I think my colony will grow this year. Many visitors everyday and the lone male is getting the girls attention.
