Re: Trial Set to Hear This
Yes, I agree. You have to tender to where you are located before deciding on the colony size hoped for. However, they can't relocate these birds at this point, later yes something can be done. It will be interesting to see Audubon's input as these birds are protected because they are migratory.

My birds have been here for about three weeks. Had a cold front coming with heavy winds. They stayed the night before and after front and wind moved in, they left. Been two days and it's still cold but no birds around. I assume they backtracked to the South until weather improves. I've never seen th...

Re: Leaving Housing Up
I leave mine up, and closed remainder of the year, but at a lower height. I do so because I will still have my birds make visits and I guess they know where they stayed during the spring. As soon as they all leave here come the sparrows but it does them no good. Leaving the house up seem a nice way ...

Done For This Season
All of the young ones have fledged and everyone is now roosting in some tree now. I only had six pair to deal with this year as I did not open up all of my rooms. The house is down and the late coming sparrows cant figure out why the house is closed. I still get some flybys in the morngs and evening...

Re: First Arrival Fernandina Beach!
Good news for you. I had similar experience with these birds that I'll never forget. In off seasons I'd cover my Martin house with a large garbage bag. Mine showed up one day and I saw them just sitting in my next-door neighbor's tree. So, I quickly lowered the house and removed the bag and as soon ...

Two Yesterday
Two adult males arrived on the 22nd in Covington La. Today, one already
has a girlfriend checking out the accommodations. The season now begins
and I'm not looking forward to sparrow and hawk patrols.

First Arival
For those that live in my area of the North Shore near Covington La, the first Martin showed up yesterday and spent the night. Today half a dozen flew by at high altitude heading north. Looks like any day now we will have ours.

Re: Question about different types of openings
For the type of house we use I have an option to go either way round hole or crescent. I go with the round hole entrance because it's much easier for the Martins to enter. The crescent, if used for this type of house, will be blocked by the nest materials they bring in. Good thing is I have no Starl...

Re: Tough Season
This has been the worst year for my colony since I've been putting up a house for them. Started out with hawks back in the spring when Martins arrived. A Red Wing (Tail) hawk hung around, as he has every year, until early summer, then what I call a Sparrow Hawk took up the task the rest of the seas...

My house is on 15 ft pole. So far no problem in So. LA with strong winds but I use support ropes from two direction.

First arrivals Feb 8 two adult males. Has been chilly here for a couple days. I think they retreated for a couple days and now I see one. At first both had females to ck out the place but I haven't
seen them anymore. Just the one male. The new season is on.
