Re: HOSP trapping magic
Michelle, im betting he'll come for her soon! Try to keep her alive(give her food and water). I took a 3x3 inch piece of plastic and cut a 1 3/8 inch hole in it with hole saw bit. I tape that over the pm house entrance where the hosp nest is(after I put the cavity trap in). This new hole is too sma...

Re: HOSP trapping magic
Hi members, The HOSP have returned, I guess for their second brood this year  Just in time for the first purple martin to check out my house! I wanted to take out the nest traps to ensure the PM did not get stuck in it. I caught a female in the nest traps to and put her in a trap at the base o...

Re: Sparrow Just Hanging Out - Threat?
Hi Michelle..as far as the male HOSP, he is always a threat.. he could enter a compartment and poke holes in eggs or kill hatchlings at any time.. I would shoot him.. as far as the bluebirds.. as they are nesting and feeding their own young in their box, they have no interest in our martins.. my BB...

Re: Sparrow Just Hanging Out - Threat?
Ok, I think the bluebirds are just hunting then since they already have the nest.
They originally had the nest IN the PM house (no eggs) so I moved it to the box and they found it. Keeping a good eye on that T14!

Re: Sparrow Just Hanging Out - Threat?
I think they are the only bluebird pair around this year, so hopefully they are set for the season in their box. I will continue to monitor the situation! Thanks Stan.

Re: Sparrow Just Hanging Out - Threat?
Thank you Stan and Thomas. I will try to scare them off when I see them, thanks for the advice. What about the bluebirds? I have a bluebird box in the area which is taken by a couple raising 1 baby. They sometimes fly to the PM house as a lookout for food. Last year I had a PM visitor and it had a t...

Sparrow Just Hanging Out - Threat?
Hi Members, I have a question on sparrows. I am hopeful that this wil finally be my year in NE Ohio! I have successfully controlled the nesting sparrow situation in my house, however there is a pesky male that sits on the perches and chirps all day long. Will this affect the Purple Martins from comi...

Re: No Nesters, Leave Dawnsong On All Summer?
1. How long should I wait to close the house in Northeast Ohio? 2. When I close the house and leave up for the summer for this year’s fledglings to find it, do I keep playing the Dawnsong all summer? Thanks. I leave up housing till Mid-September in S.W. VA, maybe a little longer than needed but I'd...

Re: No Nesters, Leave Dawnsong On All Summer?
You’re welcome Michelle. In 2022 I didn’t get my gourds up til late June early July. The visitors never entered any of my gourds. They would visit and perch on the rods above my gourds. I would think they were maybe visiting from a nearby colony. Be encouraged the martins have marked your site. I’m...

Re: No Nesters, Leave Dawnsong On All Summer?
Michelle, I am no expert by any means. I would leave your house up all summer and play the day song as well. The reason being, SY or juveniles heading back south might hear the song and mark your house for next season. In 2022 I got my house up middle to late June. It was too late for nesting pairs...

No Nesters, Leave Dawnsong On All Summer?
Questions for the experts: This year the SY male that was hanging around brought a lady friend over to check the place out a few days ago. They have since not been back to the house but are flying around occasionally. 2 questions: 1. How long should I wait to close the house in Northeast Ohio? 2. Wh...

Re: Such Beauty and Grace. Thank You Landlords!
Thank you all for your encouragement and support. I am still seeing the Martin flying around but I don’t think this will be the year. The good news is the sparrow population is under control so when they come, I’ll be ready!

Such Beauty and Grace. Thank You Landlords!
My status right is now is I have a young male frequenting my T14. Yesterday while gardening, my husband and I heard a louder sound than that coming from our Songbird Magnet. We looked up and 3 Martins were flying around way up in the sky. The sound was magnified and the way they graced the sky with ...

Martin and Sparrow Fighting!
A young martin has been on our house for about a week, taking a liking to the top floor of our T14. We are trapping sparrows, but there are still some flying around the house and that have nests. I witnessed the Martin fighting with a sparrow, like it was protecting the territory. Is this normal beh...

Re: Universal Sparrow Trap - Closes Easily
Is it possible to lower the house enough to get a ladder under it and place the trap in there? Then remove the ladder? Also, could tighten the thumb screw or bolt in the back where the door pivits just a tad, while loose enough the door closes when they go in. Wonder what it is...just sensitive I g...

Universal Sparrow Trap - Closes Easily
So we have a visitor at our house, and there are 2 pairs of house sparrows that are occupying 1 gourd and 1 cavity (I have a T14 with gourds under it). I have a Universal Sparrow Trap and the problem I am having is raising the house without the red door closing…it is so sensitive! Anyone have any ti...

Re: Hey experts - did I screw this up?
Did they return? I’m in the same boat. Had visitors last year and first one this year visited a few days ago. He was clearly trying to get another PM to check out the place. He left and has not returned yet. I play dawn song all day and have a decoy.
