Re: Intense Heat and Dying Birds

Hello everyone. Thanks for all the help. Here is latest in the saga. Recall that I lost 15-20 birds in the heat with 30-40 jumpers over three days. Then we installed the misters. The first day we had 4 jumpers but no dead birds. That is a big improvement. The second day we had three jumpers of which...

Re: Intense Heat and Dying Birds

Hello everyone, Thanks for all the responses! Here is an update. Today it hit 105 and I had 13 jumpers, two of which died. Returned the others after things cooled off. I had to spend most of the afternoon outside to see the jumpers and put them in a safe place. I have learned this. The jumpers may n...

Re: Intense Heat and Dying Birds

Yes I could put shade cloth on the stainless perch rods above the gourds. However that’s where the adults spend most of the day. I wonder how they would respond to the cloth. Also I have the four tiered PMCA large gourds, 24 on each pole. The shade cloth would provide shade for the upper rows but th...

Intense Heat and Dying Birds

Here in Central Texas we have had several days of 100-105 temps. My birds are suffering terribly. Two days ago I lost 2 birds to heat and returned 6 jumpers to nests. Yesterday I lost 8 birds and returned 9 to the gourds. Several more days of intense heat are predicted. I fear that I will lose most ...

Re: Cresent Versus Modified Excluder Entrances?

Thanks John for the good advice! One more question: If I install the inside and outside porches 1/8" below the entrance, will the owl excluder guards still fit? They seem to be rigid and the space between the guard installation points will reduce, possibly preventing the installation of the gua...

Re: Cresent Versus Modified Excluder Entrances?

Thanks Ed. I have had success with the crescent. Thinking about sticking with that. Yes, it would be tough to watch a purple martin struggling to get in or out of the modified entrance.

Thanks again!

Cresent Versus Modified Excluder Entrances?

Hello, We are purple martin colony managers for several years now. This year we had 18 breeding pair and fledged 71 birds. I need to add space if we are to have a larger colony. I am ordering PMCA Excluder Gourds with all accessories. Question: which type entrances should I order, crescent or modifi...
