Watch what you say. I was reading another posting where an individual was skeptical of a scout time posted. This person, (the one posting the really early scout time) seemed to have them reach his place before anyone south of him had reported any sightings. The crowd jumped all over the guy suggesting the scout arrival time was erroneous or even jazzed up a bit. So I took a look at the scout arrival postings for the past decade and it did give me pause. Made for a decent argument anyway. So watch it. The Texans will be all up in arms. Remember, never question the voracity of someone with a SUPER COLONY ! We're not worthy! We're not worthy! How was that? Pandora, is that you?

Hi Frank,
You might have overlooked it, but if you check the PMCA's 2009 Scout Arrival Report for TN, you will see that Victor reported his first martin on February 17th.

I spoke with Esther just yesterday and she was not sure how many are back at their place, but they certainly do have martins.
Prior to the snow on Saturday, we had 14 back. Not sure how many are here now, as we can't get a good count until the temps rise tomorrow. Hope you were not hit too badly by the recent storm.

Frank,
I live just a hop, skip and a jump away in Hendersonville,TN. And am expecting my martins anyday now.
I have had a colony for the past 4 years and my return dates have varied a bit. In the past I have offered 12 compartments however, I had 11 compartments filled and only 1 compartment for the SY birds, The SY birds never used the one compartment, but one pair did use a Seber gourd vacated by a successful ASY pair. This year I expanded to 21 compartments.
Below are my ASY returns:
2008, March 2
2007, March 24
2006, March 7
2005, March 25
So far as "super colonies" in Middle Tennessee go, you may wish to also check out Thurman Seber's (Liberty , TN) returns. But I find it hard to gauge my small colony against super colonies. Those birds always seem to race back to stake their claims at the larger colony sites.
Best of luck in 2009
