i have one pair of PM's that have been around for about two weeks now....they WERE staying in the same cavity, but for the last two nights when they come in, they go in to the same cavity, but HE comes right back out and goes into a different cavity. as if to say, "why don't we move over here?"
who's gonna get his/her way in this deal? Rick
who typically wins this battle?
What you are seeing is a pair of Martins that are trying to dominate more than one nest site.
Early in the season Martins will try to control a whole rack of gourds. As time goes along they will loose most of that space to other Martins.
The only reason I can see as to why this happens is later in the season the nest gets pretty crowded with Mom and Dad and 5 or 6 fledglings.
Usually at our colony Dad sleeps next door. LOL...

- Martin Colony History: I moved to South Florida, from Delaware, in August of 2015.
I care for a 6 condo Sunset House as well as two Deluxe Gourd Racks, with 24 Chirpynest/Excluder gourds, along a canal in Pompano Beach, Florida.
At Quiet Waters Park, nearby in Deerfield Beach, I care for a Deluxe Gourd Rack with 12 TVG's. I also care for a Deluxe Gourd rack with 12 Excluder gourds with Modified Excluder entrances. I am substituting 6 Chirpynest boxes for 6 of the Conley II entranced gourds in 2026.
At another local park, Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek, I care for a Trendsetter 12, 5 gourds rack with 60 Excluder gourds with Modified Excluder Entrances and 1 Deluxe Gourd Rack with 12 Troyer Vertical Gourds with Starling Stoppers over the Conley II's to keep out smaller starlings.
I find that mine often do that too. They appear to be pairing up but then each sleeps in a different compartment. Often at my site one will choose a house condo and one a gourd. You KNOW she is going to get her way! :-)
thanks guys, nice to know that my pair isn't the only ones who act WHACKY sometimes! the other pair comes in each evening, and whammo, right into the same cavity....
the more i learn about these guys, the more i want to learn! Rick

Mine do the same thing seems like they pick his and her gourds and rooms in the house. The pair that came in today were trying to pick 3 different rooms I think they decided, but they still went into different rooms. I am glad to know mine are not the only ones to do it.
