This morning I woke to a lot of commotion going on. I new subie arrived and
hooked up with a female. This makes 4 pair now. The original pair just started bringing in nest materials. Its kind of funny how the female goes over to another house and takes pine straw to her nest. I am still uneven here as there is still one more female than males. 4 males and 5 females. I don't know how people with very large colonies keep from being woke up to all the noise. I sure love to watch them though. Happy Mother's Day!

Both of my houses are right outside my bedroom. Don't need an alarm clock as the martins "go off" at about 6:30 every morning :)

Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.

I love waking up to the sound of Purple Martins in the morning.

If you don't like it - I'm sure there are people ready to trade places with you. Or maybe you should move your housing further away from the bird houses...

  8)
Sincerely,
Laverne

It is wonderful to here them, they are like an alarm clock. I can also tell if a starling is near by too. I got rid of another one today. So far my neighbors don't seem to mind. They just seemed to got noisier when that subie male showed up. And due to the trees in my yard, this is the only place to put the housing.
