Just a quick thank you to everyone on the forum and the PMCA as a whole, after what seemed like eternity, 2011 has been a dream year for me to date!

First official nest check today

22 Nests
15 with eggs
50 eggs total

Breakdown by housing type -

Trendsetter 16 - 3 nests/1 active with eggs (4)
T14 - 7 nests/4 active with eggs (13)

Martin Colony History: I moved to South Florida, from Delaware, in August of 2015.

I care for a 6 condo Sunset House as well as two Deluxe Gourd Racks, with 24 Chirpynest/Excluder gourds, along a canal in Pompano Beach, Florida.


At Quiet Waters Park, nearby in Deerfield Beach, I care for a Deluxe Gourd Rack with 12 TVG's. I also care for a Deluxe Gourd rack with 12 Excluder gourds with Modified Excluder entrances. I am substituting 6 Chirpynest boxes for 6 of the Conley II entranced gourds in 2026.

At another local park, Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek, I care for a Trendsetter 12, 5 gourds rack with 60 Excluder gourds with Modified Excluder Entrances and 1 Deluxe Gourd Rack with 12 Troyer Vertical Gourds with Starling Stoppers over the Conley II's to keep out smaller starlings.

What GREAT NEWS!!!! Good totals so far.

2009. 98 eggs, 66 hatch, 61 fledged.
2010. 114 eggs, 89 hatch,70 fledged.
2011. 96 eggs. 80 hatch,68 fledged.Heavy Merlin preditation.
2012. 89 eggs. 56 hatch, good fledge. Guards installed. Merlin not sighted at houses.
2013. First Egg May 24, first Baby June 13.
2014. successful.
2015. successful.
2016. Martin's population decline, suspect new housing in the neighborhood. Merlin eating well also!
2017.Population explosion :grin: . first egg May 25 in a BO-11
2018. Population stable.

2009, 1 pair of SYs w/4 eggs - wait, no 4 babies and all 4 fledged. What a great experience.
2010, 2 ASY pair and 2 SY pair 18eggs / 14 fledged.
2011, 12 pair with 49 eggs, 43 fledged.
2012, 20 pair with 113 eggs as of 1 June
2013, 22 pair with 112 eggs as of 9 June
2014, 23 pair with 113 eggs

Martin Colony History: First pair in 2009 after 28 years of trying. 3 pairs 2010, 17 pairs 2011 and 35-45 pairs since. Many additional colonies are now springing up around mine in an area once completely void of Martins. I offer 50 compartments at my site consisting of primarily Excluder II gourds on Gemini racks. Also a wooden T-14. I utilize electric fence type predator guards on the base of the poles. Supplemental feeding is crucial in maintaining my colony. I platform feed throughout the season as needed. My site tends to be a stop over point for additional birds as they migrate further north.

Congrats on a great year! Our region is enjoying a great crop of subbies this year. I guess if all goes well we will be adding a lot more this season too.

I am not sure what I have right now but I know it is good too.

Supplemental feeding plays a major role in Western Pennsylvania. Finally got my 1st pair in 2009 after 28 years of effort. The colony has grown quickly to 45 pairs that I care for. Many new colonies have now sprung up around me in the past few years as well. Where there was none.... there is many.

Terry - It absolutely did - thank you for hosting, and particularly planning an entertaining, educational, and enjoying day highlighted by Mary Dawnsong's insight into purple martin behavior and biology.

Just curious, did any of the other wannabees who attended the event eventually become Ohio landlords?

Funny you should ask. The couple across the street had Martins for years, then their colony slowly dwindled to nothing. At the time of the Buckeye fest, they hadn't had Martins for two years. They took Mary's advice on enlarging the compartments, and moved the houses to a more open ''flyway" in their yard. This year they are back up to six pairs. So all is good! Terry
