Rehabbers in San Antonio or Austin area?
Hi - Are there any rehabbers in the San Antonio or Austin area? I have an injured martin and need some help. I found a martin fledgling on my back porch (about 200 ft from my martin houses). It can't fly now - maybe it flew into my window - I don't know - there's not any blood on the bird or any other obvious sign of injury. There are only 2 compartments that the bird could have come from, and they have fledged successfully. I checked all other occupied compartments and none have missing babies. I put the fledgling in an empty gourd, and it stayed there all night - but no parent came to feed it. I plan to supplemental feed it today and hope it will be strong enough to fly. There is a wildlife rescue place near me, but the last time I called about a purple martin fledgling on the ground, they told me to leave it there and the parents will feed it...

Hey D.H, I know what you're talking about the rehab. center. They tell that to everyone who calls. I m taking care of a "runt" who is to small to fly, but wo'nt stay in the nest to be feed, so I'm feeding it live mealworms ( I place them in a small dish of water & pinch them behind the head before I feed it to the Martin ) it's looking great, & I " test " fly it in my upstairs room with the windows open, and when it can fly across the whole room & cling to a screen ( all windows there have screens ), then I'll lower the house & put it back in it's room ,with a rolled up "sock" tied to a string pluging the opening & raised the house, after a few min. I pull the sock down & wait for junior to fly out. They use. fly up to my pecan trees and " chirp " that brings other martins ( mom?) to it's aid & they tell it to follow them..Please feel free to call me anytime at (210) 324-8535 (cell#).I'll be at the PetSmart adoption center with S.C.A.T at the 281 & Bitters store from 1:00 -4:30, Good luck, Anthony , Go Spurs Go!

Following up the the link given above. Since time is of the essense, I wanted to give the link ASAP.
These folks are wonderful. I have taken several animals/birds (ie; blind feral kitten, white wing dove, house wren stuck to glue trap, etc) to them and they have never dissapointed me. I donate monthly via credit card deduction as my charity of choice instead of the typical payroll deduction to United Way, and have encouraged my co-workers to do also. I also sponser a Macaw living there with an addition targeted monthly donation. At age 67, my obit has been written in part already and includes a request to send donations to this Wildlife Rescure organization (or the donor's local animal shelter). I am still working full time, but when I retire, I plan to volunteer at their clinic
This WRR also provides a home to several black bears (including a retired Baylor University Mascot), wild cats (cougars, mountain lions etc.) monkeys, turkeys, wild pigs, etc. Most recently, they rescued 234 Egrets that were going to be euthanized by the San Antonio Zoo. I have been a member of the Zoo since 1980, but decided not to renew that membership because of this fiasco. I will probably reconsider when I "cool down", because I probably over reacted to their perceived callousness, and I feel an obligation to help support their unfortunate captive animals as well.
