Martin Colony History: I started trying to attract Purple Martins in 2011. I got my first breeding pair in 2013.

2013-1 pair, 2014-4 pair, 2015-8 pair, 2016-12 pair 60 babies :-).

I was outside this morning enjoying the crisp, clear, and sunny weather and had the opportunity to get a few in flight shots of one of the females from my colony. Also, I had a surprise visitor (immature Baltimore Oriole) stop by briefly.

Here are the images:

Thanks Adam and Jody! Jody, I have eight pairs so far I think. One pair already has 6 eggs in the nest, but none of the others do. The other nests all had green leaves as of yesterday though, so eggs should be coming soon.

One of the things I have always been focused on is trying to obtain the sharpest image I can (the most detail). Today, I took a photo of an ASY male and was truly astonished by the detail that was captured in the image. I have included two photos showing what I saw.

Here is the original image:

Here is a crop that highlights the feather details. This was from about 40 ft away from the perch. It blows my mind honestly! I had to share.

Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.

Chuck:

Amazing photos. You'd be even more blown away if you could see ALL the colors birds feathers have. Sadly we as humans can not.

Many bird species the male & female are colored/marked different, making it easy for humans to tell them apart. However some look the same to us. In the parrot world we can't tell by looking at them which is male or female. However they can see UV colors we humans can't. Many bird species, perhaps all birds, use UV light.

I was blessed by a visit by a bird I have wanted to photograph for a long time! It is an Indigo Bunting. He stopped by briefly and rested on my Purple Martin rack. 8) I nearly fell out of my chair.

Here he is:

Thanks Anthony. Yes, I agree with you. I think my favorite one though is the Indigo Bunting from today. They are beautiful birds.
