I have two gourds where I've just confirmed all eggs were non-viable.

The eggs were all laid within a couple of days of each other, so I'm wondering if they might have been damaged by excessive agitation at just the "wrong" time during some early May storms. Each pair is headed up by an ASY male, so hopefully they knew what they were doing in the fertilization department.

In any event, all the eggs have been discarded, and in an effort to create the most "drama" for the females, I stripped the existing nests out of the gourds and charged them with fresh "pre-nest" pine straw.

I'll keep the forum posted on whether or not this dramatic makeover stimulates the females to rebuild their nests and lay second clutches.

When I candled the eggs, it was obvious there had been little to no development at all. Basically a congealed yolk at one end and a void at the other. Either they were all infertile from the get-go, or their incubation went off the rails early in the process.

I would have thought just the opposite, maybe removing the eggs but keeping the nest. I removed dead young last week from one nest, but kept the nest, and I am seeing an adult pair still sitting on the porch, but have not done a nest check. Let us know how it goes, and I'll do the same.
