Martin Colony History: Started trying to attract purple martins in 2012! It's finally happened in 2017! 5 years!!! ASY male and SY female came May 1st, fledged 5 babies!

Well Delma says the show goes on, I say the slow goes on! Boy this weather has put a halt to everything. WTH!!!!!! One thing about it my life has really slowed down since I have been waiting on an egg! Today I felt abandoned with this weather. I have only seen 1 martin today. Dang weather needs to act like June 1. Tomorrow a little better, Wednesday in the 80's. I know they are where the bugs are but it sure makes a slow day without them! Dang green leaves will be molded by the time I see anything! Ok I'm done. Sorry! :) :-(  :???: :-( :x :P       :!: :?:

This is all of my emotions in the last month!!!!!!

Sharon,

Congrats!! I have five eggs in one nest with a projected hatch date of June 11th. I had 4 additional birds show up Saturday morning and it appears that two of the birds have paired up and our spending the night in another gourd. I will be thrilled with 2 or 3 pair as this should improve my chances for next year.

Any word from mama bruff?

Mitch

This is what Mine are doing!
If these are young SY birds, then there could be any number of reasons, they are the hardest to predict. Younger birds just don't seem to be in a hurry to nest and even when they do, their hearts sometimes aren't fully in it. However, once a nest is completed and eggs are laid, then they will start putting more effort to the task at hand and most of the time, they will succeed in fledging young.

Chuck's Purple Martin Page is a great resource. Always good reading and like going to a movie more than once and finding something different or unnoticed each time.

Sharon I'm beginning to wonder if sy female martins tend to come into estrous a little later than adult females; this almost HAS to be a biological thing more than anything else. But then again, what do I know? I'm just a worry wart wannabe
 :???:

Glad yours are still hanging in there bless their Martin souls!
Best of season everyone!

Yeah they are just not ready. Boy it's so exciting when you get that male that is interested. Then he starts recruiting females. Then he finds one. Then they make a nest. Then, yep what's next? This week should tell the tale! You may have 2 weeks Tim. Good luck

This is my first year that I have a pair of martins, and it's been fun watching them. They have started building a nest but it has been really cool up here. There was frost on the roof and on the cars . they would sit up on the perch and wait for it to get warm enough for the bugs to fly. Had a few fly by's of other martins but none stayed so far.
