Adult Male Stayed - Female Left
I finally got a pair in yesterday. I have a Goliad LoneStar 8 room and with SREH. The male was trying desperately to show the female how to get in the hole. She would not go for anything. Very disappointed because it appears she has left, but the male is still here. So far, not impressed with the SREH - it seems harder to establish a colony with them at this point.
Thanks to all,

For what is worth I switched all Crescent SREH to Conley Ii SREH w porches and tunnels and have two pair nesting and another pair came this morning and hung around until 11:00 am.
I didn't get a return pair last year so I made some adjustments. The birds seem to love the porches and I had 7 or 8 birds here at once which seemed like I had birds everywhere!! Very exciting. I can't imagine what it would be like to have 20 or 25 pair!!!

Thanks. I have porches, perches - the house also came with the extra deep compartments. Guess it looks like I just need to be more patient. Also, I was mowing today - couldn't put if off anymore and I''m not sure if that had something to do with the female leaving
Thanks to all,

- Martin Colony History: Trendsetter-8. Set up in 2014 at my summer cottage, a beautiful natural inland lake in N.E. Indiana's Amish Country. T-8 is on cleared land behind my pole barn and adjacent to a farmer's field
2015: Had several flyovers in early June with 1 dedicated SYM visitor who visited each day for well over a month. He brought by a few PM "parades", with 8-12 PM's who would visit all at once, but soon leave. (Added 2 gourds to bottom of the T-8). We discovered a large (Amish) colony apx. 3/4 mile South of our T-8. We think this will eventually be our "feeder" colony.
2016: Put up a Trio G'Pa lakeside. Overall, not as much interest as 2015, likely because of our vacation to Gulf Shores, AL. in early June.
2017: Finally switched over to wheat straw. Success!! One nesting pair. Fledged 4!
2018: Zilch.
2019: Slow start, nothing observed by mid June. Wet, cold Spring a factor??
2020: Barely any sightings.
2021: Several observed high in the sky, eating. No interest so far!
I am glad to learn of your recent visitors. I think your female will return, once she sees what a nice job you did mowing!
We finally saw our first Martins on Memorial Day, but haven't been back to the lake since. Heading there tomorrow for summer vacation, and will get busy right away with the Chatter CD and doing away with any HOSP we come across. This could be our week, wish us luck!!

Be careful how you wish . . for wishes can come true . . be sure that every wish you make is one that's right for you!
Can't speak to the SREH issue. As to your martin issue, the male finds the site, the female decides if they will nest. It took me ten years to get my first pair. If they had bonded before they arrived, the male left with the female. If not bonded, the male stayed. The first few years, I saw males lose 5 or 6 females before they found females comfortable enough to nest. Trees were the problem.
On advise from this forum I let the pair get established with round holes then switched to SREH once the eggs were in. It took 4 years. The males are easy. I saw dozens of females come, reject, and leave before one decided she like it.
It is sometimes maddening to watch birds come so close to nesting and then just fly off. It will happen though. I am beginning to believe there are no more patient people on Earth than Martin enthusiast.
