I figured that there would of been many new reports in the north this weekend. Dose anybody have an idea what is going on. I had a single male stay the night a week ago only to leave and not come back. I even got a call from the pmca asking me about it. I joined this fourm only to prove he was here so early so far away from the rest of the reports. Good luck to everyone this year

Martin Colony History: 24 Super and Excluder Gourds on two gourd racks, all SREH. Full occupancy. My philosophy is to maximize fledge % with existing cavities rather than adding gourds to grow colony, thus providing opportunities for new colony expansion. Fledge over 100 nestlings yearly from 24 gourds. Band nestlings in cooperation with state university. 2019 Adendum: Reduced colony size to 12 gourds to focus on more intensive management regimen.

Nothing yet here in central Wisconsin, but they should be arriving in the next week. They arrived March 29th last year, with strong SSE winds and high temps in the low 40s. Three more on the 31st. The last several weeks have not been conducive for them and it has been in the upper 30s to mid 40s with rain and strong NW winds for the last 4 days. If the winds shift and the temps hit 50 degrees, they will be here by next weekend based on previous arrivals.

If I had the choice, I would rather they wait until April when the weather is milder. It is less nerve wracking than having them get snowed in.

Have a good season.

Have you looked in your housing to see if he made it through the last cold weather? I know of two Ohio landlords that used hand warmers to keep their early arrival alive.

I don’t have the perfect site. One open flyway with trees within 80 ft. I do have a small pond they utilize during the heat of Summer. (2017) HEAVY HAWK PREDATION

Martin Colony History: I have had my martin colony on the dam of one of my ponds for nine years. The colony has grown each year, but I am now concentrating on helping friends and acquaintances who have shown interests in martins. My colony consists of three T-14's with 8 Troyer gourds attatched to each T-14, a Troyer gourd rack with 12 gourds, and another gourd rack with 18 Troyer gourds for a total of 96 nest cavities. I am having serious predation issues with hawks and owls and am experimenting with various hawk guards and "screens". Established successful supplemental feeding the last few seasons and have had a blast flipping mostly meal worms and some crickets. Faculty from Ohio University are using my colony as a research site to study parasites that target cavity nesting birds. In exchange for access to my bird trail nest boxes and martin housing, they are banding all birds involved in their study.

Big Bob ,
Very strange time in southern ohio as we wait for our birds to return. The larger, established colonies that I am aware of in southern Ohio do not have birds as yet. There was a report yesterday from Chillicothe but I am not sure of exact location, or number of birds reported.
I am concerned that the very cold weather that we had in the entire south two weeks ago may have hit traveling birds hard. I sure hope that I am wrong, but if I don't see any ASY scouts in the next few days....something may have happened on their journey north.
The journey that these birds make is truly remarkable and shouldn't be taken for granted !! I realize that I am "preaching to the choir" on this forum!! Good luck to everyone out there who is anxiously watching the skies !

Martin Colony History: Colony established May 20, 2017 after three unsuccessful years. Persistent and aggressive Tree Swallows plagued the site, but beyond learning - and practicing - to control them, was the return in 2017 of a 2016-SY-M previously unable to find a mate. As a handsome ASY-M, he brought along two females and a swagger that soon put the Tree Swallow issue to rest. As the anchor pair, he and his mate hatched all six of their eggs into fat and healthy babies into what settled in to be a three-pair, flourishing new colony with up to 11 birds total, including 3 SY-M trouble makers.

Same here in SW Ohio - no PMs. :-(

4th Season, just north of Lebanon and have not seen one Martin, not one, and have been watching . . . a lot (I'm retired). Housing up (but closed), new pine straw, lotsa playing of Dawnsong and Daytime Chatter. Nothing, but a trio of Tree Swallows; already opened them a shepherd hook gourd on back of property, and they are vigorously investigating it.

One PMCA Scout report in Lebanon and one in nearby Waynesville just yesterday.

Hi I'm from Waynesville and got a lone ASY female back yesterday morning. First time l got female before a male. I had three gourds open but she kept going to another. I opened it up and that was the one she wanted. l bet they are holding up down south which is a good thing. Hopefully the worst of the weather is behind us now.

Hi Mark, thanks for the response.

Yes, I saw your Scout report for 3/26 and it really put me to looking, but still not a PM sighted (or heard) around here as of dark, 3/31. Normally by now I would have seen many ASYs passing thru and stopping off at my site even though I do not (yet) have a nesting colony.

Funny that your female wanted a different gourd . . . definitely a female!

Super colony 5 miles NW of me appears to be closed this season, unless I'm misreading the signs, e.g., two lone gourds up, usually this time of year it would be more like two or three RACKS up, some double deck racks! Do not know the lady and would never be able to stop and inquire, i.e., some birders want their privacy and I honor that.

I always slow to look at some PMs and their housing on Waynesville Road across from Thomas Drive on my way to Sugarcreek Bird Farm in Bellbook (to board my parrot).

Thanks again for replying; nice to hear from someone so nearby. Good luck with your Colony!

I had a male martin stay the night one night never seen him again . This is the earliest I seen a martin at my place. I am becoming very concerned! !! I see lots of reports from the past years around the first week of April but the scout report dosnt show much movement north. I know there is lots of time but it's hard when u care so much. Best of luck everyone! !###

My female found a mate on Monday ( talk about easy) and another ASY male showed up during the week. Now I have three. I did not know there was a super colony nearby. That would be something to see come June with all of them flying around. Those PMs you look at on Waynesville Road; that's me, feel free to stop in when you are in the area. Hoping you get a pair or two soon!
