Martin Colony History: Hosting martins for about 5-6 years, keeping records back to 2014. Using all gourds-horizonal Troyers and Excluders
2018 33 pair, 140 fledged
2017-25 pair, 106 fledged
2016 25 pair, 87 fledged
2015 24 pair, 70 fledged
2014 21 pair, 43 fledged

I've had 1 baby left out of 5 who hadn't fledged yet. The earliest day to fledge for the group of 5 was July 21. He's been hanging out the door last two days and parents been around. Everyone else has fledged from the whole group...I had 106 successful babies and am going out of town so I was anxious to find this little one out. When I came by this afternoon he was sticking his head out again just watching the day, no parents in site. I wondered if he was ok, so I brought down the rack and took a look at him...brought him out of the gourd. He looked find and was really upset. Put him back in the gourd and I had a sock in the entrance to keep him from coming out. I should have waited a little bit longer, but in two minutes I started to bring the rack up and gently took the sock out. Well, I heard him jump up on the porch and out he went. He flew low and then went up in one of the tall trees 30 ft high, probably 200 feet away. He stayed there for 3 minutes and then flew of out over the woods, fairly high up and flapping well. Question: I made a stupid decision and know better...there was no parents around. Will this fledgling meet up at some point with his parents? I am not sure if this was his virgin flight or not.Could he return to the gourd and wait up for his parents? The recent fledglings have been accumulating in the evening around the racks. I am hoping this little guy will survive despite me. He looked very healthy.
I guess I want someone to tell me it will be ok....Cindy

I understand your panic.. I've done stuff like that...more than once.

He came out of his gourd...They are amazing birds, he will find his way back. The parents will find him in the area or catch up with him this evening when they return. If he's in a tree nearby they will hear him. They will be glad he's finally out.

Hope that helps.
Not many people on the forum anymore...season's about done.
Enjoy your vacation.

Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.

I'm sure we've all done this a time or two.

If he was able to make it to a tree he can make his way back. Even tho we think they all make the same sounds they don't. The parents will know his sound. They will find him & guide him back to the nest for the night.
