Martin Colony History: 2010-2014 located in Slidell LA. Gourd rack with 16 gourds. Max of 2 pairs during this short period in Slidell. Plenty of fledglings.

2014-present.. moved to Broussard LA. Same Gourd Rack but added a 6 room house (modified from a 12 room)

2020: after a long drought of nothing, 4 pairs and 4 nests, 23 eggs total.
6 fledges.

2021: 9 pair, 47 eggs
36 hatchlings
30 fledged

2022: about 12 pairs.. many eggs, all fledged.. only had one hatchling die.. probably because of our schnauzer. :(

2023: 16 pairs. So far about 60 chicks with about a dozen eggs to go.

2024: 13 pair. About 60 eggs
2025: 14 pairs .. 69 eggs.

Yesterday evening I was able to get a good nest check done.

Total nests 8

Nests with eggs: 5
Total eggs 17

This is the best year I’ve had and very excited to see. Three of the nests have 2 or 3 eggs , only one nest has 5 eggs.. and one nest has 4. So I expect more laying over the next few days. The three with no eggs are newer nests and lots of oak leaves have been brought in.

Great news David!

Lost all mine with the mid Feb freezes, but have a bunch now and at least five new hatchlings this week (watched them hatch on TV). Probably have more, but this rain needs to stop so I can check the other nests.

Good to hear from you Todd! Been a while. I still work in Port Allen during the week.

Yes, I’m in the middle of a great season. 2nd year Ive had martins at new location after about a 6 yrs of nothing. Last year I had 4 pairs.

This year it “exploded”. I may have lost one or two during the hard freeze too. They were just starting to trickle in when it happened

I’ve got about 4 SY males paired up in the batch of 8 pairs. The latest pair is another SY male.. so looks like the SY males outnumber the ASY males.

Need to do a good nest/egg count Sunday Pm.

Take care!
