Martin Colony History: began in 2001. I've had Purple Martins for 25 years.

Tomorrow morning I am having a total knee replacement surgery on my left knee. This evening I decided to do what might be my final nest check for the year. I have 10 gourds containing 45 eggs. And tonight when I checked, three of the nests had hatched in the last couple days so I have 12 baby hatchlings up. There are four babies in three separate gourds. They are so tiny, With fragile pink skin; And their black eyes are closed. They open their mouth for feeding when I unscrew the lids. I made no attempt to touch them other than to make photos. I am so excited.… Like the proud papa of my baby birds.

Wonderful photos- congratulations! Even though you probably won't do any more nest checks this season, while recuperating you can enjoy the show of parents bringing in food, and of course- fledging day. Good luck with your surgery and wishing you a speedy recovery.

bbbdco - how exciting to see those brand new babies. I bet you'll be able to get back out there in about 2 weeks, with the help of a walker and someone to walk beside you to check on them again. Until then you can enjoy watching them from your home.

As I said before, I had both my knees replaced last year so let me know if I can be of any help to you in the advice department. Good luck!
