If you had predator issues the year before it can cause them to abandon. Just for example I helped someone with a thriving site who suddenly said the birds were scarce mid season. I put netting on all their poles and caught 8 rat snakes in the next few days. They were clearly being eaten in the night by these snakes.

The martins never returned the following year not a single one. It had around 30 pairs that year before the snakes came. A real shame.

If you haven’t had any predators let’s just hope they are late. They are coming in real heavy right now in FL. Counted over 40 here this evening.
