so here are the cutest 3....no parasites in nest today...yeah!!!! 4 nest changes to get there....

- Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.

Laverne and all the rest of you...
If you were anywhere near I would have you over for some wine....or champaign....
I invited a few friends over to see my martins, and it was so funny...it was about 7:00 when they came, and I didn't know then that the martins pretty much stop flying around 6:30. So we didn't get to see them. And the babies were small, so didn't need much feeding. But, my friends weren't real interested anyway....just humoring me...so need to get some bird friends that can feel the joy of seeing these birds!!!
which reminds me....several posts on web say they feed 7:00 - 7:30 or so. not my birds. maybe its too cold here by Lake Michigan?? still seems warm outside, but they aren't flying into nest compartment much after 6:30 pm.

Another thing to remember, Sharon: When there are three mouths to feed, it only takes half as many trips to fill the bottomless pit as when there are six mouths to feed.
Does that make any sense?
The young will get satisfied and stop begging and the parents stop delivering. I had two late nests with only one young each and I rarely saw a bug being delivered to these nests. I had to watch for a long time... but, nest checks revealed a big healthy chick. The nests containing 4 or 5 young were very active especially as the nestlings got bigger.
...just wait 'til next year...
