3rd yr, my 2 pair from last look to not have made it back (same as yr 1 to yr 2 - 1 pair, neither made it back).....so i'm 'starting over' again and my 1st was an ASY male. i imagine he was one of the single SY males that was hanging around last yr.
I applaud your commitment, I hope you're rewarded and have the best colony in the county. Best wishes. ASY male for me.

Martin Colony History: :
2022 - 1 pair, 5E, 4H, 4F
2023 - 2 pair, 9E, 5H, 5F
2024 - 4 pair, 16E, 16H, 14F (2 more pair started nests but failed due to weather/loss of mate).

thanks. had been trying for over 30 yrs (the last 25 were more serious/better location/setup) before i got that 1st pair in 2022. it's tough to get into may and have no birds back when their 'normal' arrival time is early april. on one hand, it's nice not having to worry about them in the late spring cold snaps but then i have to worry if any will ever show up.

looks like this yr, so far, i have 3 pair (ASY m/ASY f, ASY m/SY f, SY m/SY f) and 2 extra SY males. so despite 'starting over' every yr, i seem to be sloooowly gaining numbers. 8 adult birds on the racks is about the most i've ever had at once.

2023-- A lot of visitors
2024-- A lot more visitors

Would anyone else care to share their colony starter? I find it interesting that in these responses it has been predominately ASY's starting the colonies.
