I am amazed how big and sturdy these winches are bigger than I thought will be a great upgrade prob going to get my Gemini Rack up this weekend and the first winch on ,then get them put on my other racks in the next week or so, so looking forward to this next season

I have been using a 2500lb electric winch I bought from harbor freight. Cost about $80 less any discount coupons. I have had it on for 2 years. You need a small battery to operate it. Its made for an ATV. Has a remote control to operate it. I can raise or lower it from my house. It has a holding brake that makes it work right for our use. I never liked being below my T-14 cranking it down. As I get older it gets more difficult to stoop down and crank.

- Martin Colony History: 5th year hostess. Currently 58 confirmed breeding pair. 218 Fledged, 35 older nestlings, 2 new nests with 8 nestlings. 100% occupancy
We have used a modified worm gear winch for 5 years now. It has never failed! We hosted 59 pair in 2017. The very smooth operation allows nest checks all the way to fledgling. No jerking or sudden drops keeps growing nestling calm! Consistent checks conditions nestling to the routine so they expect you to open the caps and take a peek inside! You will appreciate the difference and how the birds react...but be warned...females may continue to brood their eggs after you have lowered the rack! No worries, just speak to them and gently nudge them aside to get an accurate egg count!
Good Luck for the 2018 martin season!

Could you post a link to where you are buying the worm gear winches? The winches that come with most gourd rack are absolutely useless, and are rattling the rack terribly, particularly when lowered.MichaelH wrote:I expanded my colony with more gourds and a new Gemini gourd rack ,I upgraded to the worm gear winch ,so thought while I was at it might as well order new worm gear winches for my other poles so know I find myself with 6 winches to install .hoping they work out good read other landlords posts on these and sounds like they are pretty good so I went with them and sure they will help me and my wife with the colony so got 12 weeks to get them up yeah we ar3 getting closer hope you all have a very happy Christmas.
