Nest Camera

Just wanted to tell you all that I purchased a nest cam this year and installed it in one of my gourds. If you ever wanted to know what went on inside the nest this is the way to go. I witnessed the nest building, egg laying, hatching, feeding, and fledging of the martins 24 hours a day and it was truly amazing. It is very easy set up and economical.

Miked,
What an experience!! I would love to do that too. Do you have any pictures you can publish on this site, if so, please post them. I have seen nest cams on the web and they have always fascinated me. My Martins are just about gone for the year, a few stop by every evening but they are even getting fewer and fewer.
I will be going to the Martin Festival in NC on the 6th of August, even got a reservation on the boat to go out under the bridge, I can't wait.
Good luck next year.

- Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.
I jumped off the deep end and purchased one of the nest cameras, too. However, mine is still sitting in the box. We took it out, hooked it up, found it to work well - and then, waiting for a couple of nests to fledge - first one thing and then another - it never got installed into a gourd. There's a bunch of procrastinators at my house!
So, the good thing is; I still have all of that to look forward to next season!

Jayne - you are gonna "love" that trip to the roost! Have fun!! Be sure to take a video camera with you. Still shots at a roost just don't do them justice. Plus the sounds from all those birds is breathtaking!

Jayne, if you want to see a nest cam, let me know, and I will bring one of mine to the Festival next weekend. If you want to see some video taken with it, then email me at sbunn1@cox.net and I will give you my website page that has some video on it.

Jayne, I wish I were compuler literate enough to help send you some pictures that we have from our web cam. Sounds silly, but i take pictures that i see on the television....I know there is a way to attach the camera o our vcr, but Don and I will never get an award for being mechanically minded. all I can say is the sights that we have seen by just sitting in the chair in the kitchen have been so amazing. From the very second they entered the nest, to that egg gettiing just an itty bitty crack, to seeing that little head just pop up like pop corn, to watching them feed, to the parents cleaning them up, oh so many things. We are so very much in love with these precious martins, something I never thought I would see. To us, years ago, they were just a bird we had heard about, now they are a truly living breathing bird, that entertains us all the time, keeps us on our toes, has made us some wonderful friends. So jayne, I wish you only the best, cause that is all you will get

Holly. I know your birds are gone for this year, but do try to get that camera hooked up to a vcr. It's really pretty simple. The Yellow plug goes in the Yellow plug of the VCR. The White one goes to White. The Red is for the Power, and plugs into the adaptor that plugs into the wall. I have one I bought from S&K. It has a picture of the directions. If you need me to, I'll gladly copy it, and send it to you. Possibly you could figure yours out by having it??? CUL Lou

Lou, thank you soooooo much, Ijust saved your instructions, and if Dons tells me he needs further help, I will get back at ya!!! We certainly wanted to hook it up last year, but Don had no strength to move anything at all, and of course there i was wearing the brace from hades. haha..so this season was not a great one as far as getting technical things done. Thank you so very very much, next year we will have it all down pat!!!! (Im still praying for that ez lift pole and some new homes for more little guys)
