I removed all the round holes wooden houses replaced with crescent
WDC, and now conley II Not worried at all the birds flew into there crescents
like they had lived in them for years the the entire town of Barrington RI
is SREH only one site is round holes and empty the birds are in all the different SREH and have had no problems I have a site well inland and
there are 12 crescent gourds for any birds looking for a home. In Rehoboth
MA there is a Country club all SREH the other two sites in the town are round holes and empty. New England martins prefer the SREH and NJ is
mostly SREH have been to many sites there. Active and first time landlords.
The martins prefer large units and SREH. SREH has never been a issue here. And very few people have SREH up here!
I have no round hole units at all. total of 108 units with all my sites

- Martin Colony History: First started in Gretna, La in 1969 with a small homemade house, have had martins ever since at 2 different homes in Texas
A suggestion that I have is about ease of entrance into the SREH. Two of the heavily used entrances that are easy for a martin to enter if they have a porch are the WDC and Clinger. Both of these are not as restrictive as the Excluder. My suggestion is that if you are starting a new colony, it may be best to start with one of these two, mounted within 1/8inch of the porch, and the martins will quickly learn to use these two entrances. Then if you have starlings that can enter, then switch to a more restrictive entrance like the excluder or excluder II entrance.
I have found that the original crescent is also very good, but the martins seem to have a harder time learning to use this entrance, and then there is the wing entrapment issue that arises with its use.

Just switched out tunnels on 6 troyers for WDC entrances.
That leaves 48 naturals with round holes and "perched" canopies, 6 troyers with round holes and porches and 6 troyers with WDC and porches.
I gave the WDC the primo, waterfront fly away locations. Hopefully I'll get a convert or two and gradually make the switch.
