Saw this online from Wisconsin. At first I thought it was about Bernie Nikolai from Edmonton, CA...but it's another Nikolai.

Anyway...article says martins have been using this old wooden house for decades...maybe some folks in Wisconsin should pitch in and buy a new one?...Maybe I should keep my nose in Missouri (grin)!

Passing along for summer reading.

John You are right, alot of people here in Wisconsin still think the old fashion way,let nature take it's course. Not me I have built my colony to 43 pair now and have 238 eggs and babies all together just by taking good care of them.I can't seem to get anyone around me to think the way I do and they let there old garbage houses up year after year with almost no martins left in them anymore.I have alot lookers wondering how I get them all and when I tell them what I all do for them most turn there nose and leave.Alot of landlords in Wisconsin don't believe in feeding and let there martins starve, including the DNR.

Doctor...

I'm very encouraged by the good work you and some northern landlords, both in the U.S. and Canada, are doing. It's absolutely amazing to me that martins can thrive as far north as they do...with good housing and some TLC.

I do not know the attitude toward martins of folks in this article...they surely were interested enough to show up on a cold morning to learn... The old wooden house looks like something from a generation ago...kinda of cool...but sort of sad that it's sat there for decades and not even a coat of fresh paint. It would be great to see it replaced with something with SREH and deeper compartments..something that does not require a bucket lift (grin) for a nest check!
