My neighbor notified me that one of my babies was on the beach. Sure enough there it was standing on a log. I got a hold of it and returned it to what I could best determine by counts was its home.
The next morning there it was again (housing in water) on the beach. Well I spent some time observing it throughout the day, and the mother would bring it a bug from time to time. I still could not determine its home base. I wasn't sure if just putting it on the house if the mother would lead it to the proper home or not. One thing for sure it wasn't spending the night on the beach. As darkness approached the little bugger got into the water and wanted to start swimming home. I swept it up and put it into a box and said Ok tonight you sleep in our house.
My daughter and I scrambled some eggs and with a lil TLC managed to get some food into it. The next morning he realized scrambled eggs were good and had breakfast in the sunroom. That night I searched my records and determined what gourd he was from. I returned him and crossed my fingers.
It all turned out good, while on the beach the parents circled me several times, and I assumed that was a thank you
I would say you were very lucky.Last week during our hot spell here it got around 100 degrees and you could think how hot it was in the gourds(even with air vents).I had over 25 jumpers and also tried to take them into my house. This worked for a day of feeding and watering, but it got to much and then I took them out and but a few in other houses.Guess you dont mess with mother nature as when the others fledged I checked the houses and there the babys were all dead.So doing a good deed never paid off for me.Others might get lucky.
