Late this afternoon a female martin arrived here. She looked healthy and full of energy. She sat on porch of one rack, then flew up again, came to another rack sat on another porch. The occured several times. Started getting darker and saw her fly up so I don't know if she came back or not. SHe was not scared of us at all. NOt for sure if she is one of ours or not. I will be watching for her return or her exit from a gourd in the morning. I will post on scout report. Even if she isn't ours, martins are in this area.

THanks Harley and James.
I am doing good. Chris and I have both been very busy with work and getting ready for our martins to return. Also awaiting our first grandchild (girl) this spring. We are hoping in future years she will enjoy martins as much as we do. Bad weather coming our way tonight. Hope everyone in the line of the storms are safe.

Thanks to all of you. Well this morning there is an ASY male sitting on power line and has been flying high, gliding, and diving, but no vocalizations. Have not seen the female. Flung crickets, but he would not take any. I will trying flinging again later today. He looks cold because it is cold here. Supposed to be in low 60's tomorrow, if the weatherman is right. If he doesn't take food, maybe he will be fine until tomorrow when warmer temps come our way.
Good luck to all of you with this new martin season.

Hey Terri,
Congrats on your first arrival, you must be excited, I am sure. Did you add anything new this year? When you get a scout, my Uncle who lives in MCcomb MS, should be getting one around the same time period. I have not talked to him to find out yet. Best of Luck this season.

Diane,
Congratulations on your new grandchild! Yes we are excited. How many martins do you have now Dianne?
Scott,
Your uncle should be getting martins soon. My neighbor also has a martin at this colony. And I saw a female here this morning with 2 males. We added a 24 gourd genimi rack with troyer horizontals and supergourds. We have taken our 18 gourd deluxe rack down due to ground stake bending in last years storm. ALso didn't put up a home made rack that the pole is also bent slightly. May put up deluxe rack again, just haven't decided yet. We had 159 pair last year. It is almost unbearable to do nest checks on that many weekly when it is 100 -110 degrees outside. We really don't want anymore than that to take care of.

an brain evualation on my cns vasculitis, so i didnt get to watch my birds fri.
But girl when we got bk from jackson @ aprox 3:00pm they were martins flying and hollaring everywhwere
6 females noW and aprox 9 asy males
I have 7 close by older colonies and have saw few birds there, 2 i know of only has 1 house and its leaning over and they do not take care of the house or birds
IM with you when it gets so hot and trying to do the nest cks and 100 degrees
with my lupus and numb weak legs now, i have to use a cane all the time now for my balance, I HOPE I DONT HAVE SO MANY JUMPERS WHEN IT GOTS SO HOT THIS YEAR
They are so funny trying to pick there houseing cavity out and fighting over the females it's too cute!
The main problem i found out last year when the little ones fledged and would come back in to roost with there parents the other adult martins were very agressive and mean to the fledgins that werent there babys and would
peck and hurt them very bad for getting in the wrong hole, so when i cleaned out my houseing after they left i found 7 dead fledgings where the adults had gotten so ruff in them they killed them, So i will defently have to scope
poles down at fledging time this year to check on the fledgings to make sure they are ok. If i see the adults beeing agressive to them.
It just made me sad to fing so many healthy babys dead becuse of the adults .
Have a great weekend Birdy ill keep ya posted!!!
