I haven't seen any sy's yet, but I have around 9 pair. 5 pair in the front t-14 and 4 pair in the gourds in back. No one taking to the coates alm. house in the back. Come on subbies! Frost tonight but 60's tomorrow.

Looks like I am going to end up with 3 ASY pair. I had a fourth pair hang around for a couple days but I have had 3 pair stay for over a week and have begun nest building. Last year I had 4 subbie pairs stay with only 1 ASY male so I am curious to see how many subbies I can draw in this year. I would like to get at least 10 pair but I would still be happy with just 3 pair. This weather has been crazy. It finally has stopped raining here this afternoon and the sun is thinking about coming out. It is close to 50 degrees so they are out feeding.

- Martin Colony History: First pair in 2009 after 28 years of trying. 3 pairs 2010, 17 pairs 2011 and 35-45 pairs since. Many additional colonies are now springing up around mine in an area once completely void of Martins. I offer 50 compartments at my site consisting of primarily Excluder II gourds on Gemini racks. Also a wooden T-14. I utilize electric fence type predator guards on the base of the poles. Supplemental feeding is crucial in maintaining my colony. I platform feed throughout the season as needed. My site tends to be a stop over point for additional birds as they migrate further north.

Sure is tough to make heads or tails of this season. There are birds showing up in PA now that are not in very good shape and are very hungry.
I think I got at least my birds back from last year (3 pair) and maybe another pair so far. Seems like you have to get that first Sunny 80 degree
day in May to really get them moving between colonies and settling in.
Subbies should be abundant but you never know till they get here.

Supplemental feeding plays a major role in Western Pennsylvania. Finally got my 1st pair in 2009 after 28 years of effort. The colony has grown quickly to 45 pairs that I care for. Many new colonies have now sprung up around me in the past few years as well. Where there was none.... there is many.
