anyone in ohio have eggs yet?
Just wondering if anyone has eggs? I still have martins that have not finished their nest yet.and some that have been here since first weeks of april that should have eggs by now don't. So could it be all this rain we have had delaying everything?

- Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.
Am not in Ohio. Am in central PA....no eggs here yet, but should be soon.
Usually the ASY's show up late March, early April. They find a mate & then they "play house" until the SY's start to show up. Then nest building begins. Once you see them bringing in green leaves assume egg laying will start soon.

I did a colony check yesterday (sunday) and was pleased to find 16 eggs in 6 different nests. 50 nests total so far, some started, some finished. Subbies are still coming in. Depending upon a lot of factors from mother nature, it looks like it may be a bumper crop this year. That is amazing after the rocky spring weather we've had!!!

I am in east central IN and only about 20 miles from the OH line. I had my first egg laid this past Friday. I definitely think all the weather we have had is slowing things down. I had ASY's start nest building several weeks ago and then they stopped for over a week during constant cool and rainy weather. Things really picked up again last week and I am betting I will have a lot of eggs laid over the next couple weeks. I had 10 nest this past Friday and 8 of them looked complete. They all egg green leaves in them.

- Martin Colony History: First pair in 2009 after 28 years of trying. 3 pairs 2010, 17 pairs 2011 and 35-45 pairs since. Many additional colonies are now springing up around mine in an area once completely void of Martins. I offer 50 compartments at my site consisting of primarily Excluder II gourds on Gemini racks. Also a wooden T-14. I utilize electric fence type predator guards on the base of the poles. Supplemental feeding is crucial in maintaining my colony. I platform feed throughout the season as needed. My site tends to be a stop over point for additional birds as they migrate further north.
I am in Western PA the first eggs are laid here. I did a nest check last week and had 2 eggs. Suspect more by now.
Others are just about ready.

Supplemental feeding plays a major role in Western Pennsylvania. Finally got my 1st pair in 2009 after 28 years of effort. The colony has grown quickly to 45 pairs that I care for. Many new colonies have now sprung up around me in the past few years as well. Where there was none.... there is many.
Terry, that's great! Seeming that you are like 15 minutes away from me I wonder what the hold up is here with my birds? Iv had green leaves for a week maybe longer. Hope to stop by your place soon. Just have to let me know whens a good time. Thanks for posting and letting me know. Now I'm sure mine should be ready to start anyday.atleast I would hope so.

Proud to reply to my own post. (lol) I have 16 nest and as of tonight 2 of them have a egg. Guess the weather did slow things down some. But now that we are going into june hopefully the weather subsides and things take off. Hope you all have a wonderful season.
