I am so excited I could bust. As a first time purple martin landlord, I didn't expect this my first year. Today's nest check revealed 11 total baby martins. Gourd #1 has three pinkies, Gourd #5 has four babies, and Gourd #8 has four babies. Three families out of an eight gourd colony is pretty terrific I think. Thanks to everyone for your advice. Eleven babies ............... wow!

Johnny,

I love your enthusiasm. What a great start with 3 pairs your first year. It sounds like you are really enjoying your birds. That is awesome! It will be interesting to see how many more you get next year.

Good luck.

Good for you Johnny! You're off and running now! Your colony is most likely set to explode now, to give you many more enjoyable years.
Congrats!

Martin Colony History: Had a colony many years ago which dwindled over a couple of years and then did not return. Kept trying each year for almost 20 years and finally had a small success in 2011 with two pairs nesting. Colony has grown slowly each year with 22 pairs in 2015. In 2016 my gourd rack of 18 gourds filled up so I added 4 more gourds and then put up a small rack of 6 gourds. All of those were claimed within a few days so I believe I have at least 25 pairs this year.

Great news Johnny! Congratulations on your first attempt success. Hope you have many years of colony growth.
