- Martin Colony History: 22 year landlord, 14 at current residence..offering 9 racks and a homemade T-8 for 166 total cavities. 160 Pair in 2018 Racks consist of a Deluxe 12, AAA 16, Starburst 16, 2 K-18 Series, Super 24, 2 Gemini, Multi-purpose/two trio’s/4gourds and a T-8..Great hobby to be involved in..
Well its been 10 days since the last check and things are progressing well. Updated count is 195 babies and 102 eggs, most to hatch any day now..63 confirmed pair, up from 49 last year. It looked like at least 55 are about to fledge within a few days..Had storm blow through Monday night and had a few eggs (10) roll out of nests, put them back but probably got to cool..barring any major storms,(or predators), will be another successful year..Tony

Well, since nobody responded..I will.. Wow Tony, great job on your colony so far. It seems you are doing everything right with the the increase in pairs. I'm sure your Martins appreciate your efforts.. I guess nobody else gives a chirp/gurgle on Kansas nest checks.
But hey, I personally think you are doing a fine job...keep up the good work..
and thanks for your humor...

Hey Tony,
I'm glad you are doing so well. I can not wait until I get half of the pairs you have. I bet there is quite the commotion at your site.
Have you been experiencing any of the heat or drought they are receiving further south?
Enjoy your birds...and I care about the Kansas landlords.

- Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.
Hi Tony!
I read your post and didn't respond...but I was thinking, Wow! How hard it must be to count 63 pair. I have 4 pair and two nests are about to fledge. I have a re-nest pair that should hatch any day. Then my fourth nest is beyond hatching time with four eggs. One dented, two very light weight and shells look thin on one side and the other feels like there could be something to it, so I'm giving it more time. It's been about 20 days since the last egg was laid.
Anyway, the last few evenings I have approximately 15-20 martins soaring overhead and four barn swallows. Several do land on my two houses. I stayed out the last hour of light and watched my pairs go in. I don't know where all the extras go.
But, I find it difficult to count the 15-20 (hence the guess). That's why I am amazed at your ability to count that many. I am loving the activity!
Tangula, where we are at (west of Wichita), we have been dryer this year but are receiving rain each week now. Our temps were upper 90's low 100's until last week we had upper 80's. Now we are heading back to the 100's. We seem to have plenty of insects and area ponds, although lower than usual, do have water. We are fortunate so far. I think Tony may be having more rain than us.
Tony, I am in awe of your colony and love reading your posts.

2011 4 pair, 5 babies, 5 eggs left
2010 2 pair, fledged 3 each
2009 1 pair, fledged 2

Just now read your TWO posts. Yes! You are doing a great job of landlording.
Great success. I have one pair of ASYs (Putt & Minnie) and they had 4 eggs. We also have one pair of SYs (Clyde & Lois) and they had 4 eggs.
The nest check today was 3 babies, 9do and 1 egg for Putt & Minnie and 2 babies hatched today and 2 eggs to go for Clyde & Lois.
When you have fewer pairs you get more personal with them
. I am tickled with my great success.
Oh! I almost forgot, congratulations BEV for putting up with TonyG for 25 years!

Thanks guys and gals, I feel wanted again
...Tangula we are about to go into our "summer mode" here in Ks. Temps are going to be in 90's the next week.
My share of rain here in Olpe has been miminal, though we got back to back 1" rains last week. Deb thanks for reading my post. The only way of me telling how many martins I have is when I start doing nest checks and counting nest with eggs/nestlings. There is no way of counting and getting accurate count until then, oh and in-laws used to live in Pratt (last name was Outten)....Paul, wife thought your comment about putting up with me was a "good" one...Rick, can always count on you for a comment, your right, us Kansas landlords have to stick together...
