Banding completed for 1/2 of colony - pictures!!

Martin Colony History: Colony started - 2007 with one pair
As of 2018 - 84 cavities offered, max # of pairs hosted - 82.

MRBO (http://mrbo.org/) was here for the last 2 afternoons and ended up banding about 1/2 of the nestlings. They'll finish up on 7/6 with the last half.

Thanks to Louise and John B. for all the helpful tips - everything went very smoothly. A few landlords showed up - even Ole Paul and his lovely wife Sharon came all the way from Macon to help and check out the event. A few potential landlords showed up - even one that was about 10 yrs. old - she was very excited about the birds and it looks like she might make Grandma & Grandpa put up a gourd rack! :lol:

Thanks for sharing the pics. Curious, since they took measurements in addition to the banding, how long did it take them to band how many nestlings?

Come next year, you will find yourself spending a lot of time watching for any returning SY's with bands. You should get a few.

Hi Tim - with visitors asking questions, it took about 3 - 3.5 hours to band 50.

Yesterday, as attendance dwindled, Dana was able to band 28 in 1 hour. That was: federal band, state band, tarsal measurement, & weight. Dana is very methodical and steady with the kids and I really appreciated the care she was taking to ensure each kid was secured when they came out of the gourd, went through the process and was placed back in the gourd. I had a card for each nest and the card went with the gourd / bucket and was checked off. Slow but steady - really eased my feelings of anxiety!

Kathy, I so enjoyed viewing your photos and hearing about your banding experience. The information shared by Louise and John was invaluable and I am sure it contributed to making your banding experience a very organized process.

Hi Kathy,

Thanks for letting Sharon and myself enjoy the experience of banding your young'ens. I would like to let the forum readers know that Kathy has such a beautiful colony and locations. She is a gracious and knowledgeable landlord.

Like Kathy said, Dana and Ethan were very precise in what they were doing as the banding, measuring, weighing and returning the babies back to the racks went so smoothly.

Now I have to get a better spotting scope for next year so I can ID the SYs. I told each one in the bucket exactly where I live.
