- Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.
Hey Phil.
We had a nest cam several years ago. We had to run the wire to our computer for the output from the camera. It was a bit of a nuisance, but the opportunity to view the inside of the nest cavity made it all worthwhile. I wouldn't trade it for anything. The pictures were clear, good quality, go for it!! I know you will enjoy it; and the things you will learn about your Purple Martins are priceless.
Beware that the nest cam is addictive. You will find yourself spending too many hours watching a bunch of baby birds -- but then again what is "too" many?
Enjoy...
Sincerely,
Laverne

You have 3 wires, audio, video, and power. So you can plug it in at your TV or wherever you are connecting it for viewing.
See my live Nest cam at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/purple-ma ... ndall-rash and ColonyCam at http://chris.homedns.org:8081 (Internet Explorer required and click yes to allow the add-in to run. Also enable sound by clicking the speaker in the upper left corner).
Be aware that you can also witness things you may wish you had not seen. Two years ago I had a nine-day old nestling die trying to swallow a large dragonfly. I did not see it live, but played back the video after I found the nestling dead with the dragon fly still in its mouth. And then last year my camera caught an attack by a rat snake that killed the adults and all the babies. I was not watching, and still have not had the fortitude to play the video. I am sure it will be pretty distressing to watch.Laverne wrote: Beware that the nest cam is addictive. But in spite of the down side, Laverne is right: watching and listening to the birds really is addictive.

Has anyone used a GoPro camera with PM's?

I don't think they would be good for inside the nest video. But they are great at capturing wide angle HD daylight video.
Also, they have many ways to attach the camera to all different sorts of mounts. One of the mounts is just a double sided sticky tape that you can attach to the martin house.
I was thinking about attaching the GoPro camera to one of the poles or decks to get some close up HD video of the Martins.
Also, it comes with a washable, water/mud proof removable case.

- Martin Colony History: 1 gourd rack with 24 gourd capacity. 2018, my 11th year hosting martins.
18 pair in 2017.
I've been using nest cams for a few years. The cam the PMCA offers is a decent cam. I just purchased another this year. So I say go for it.
But, like Charles said, be prepared for anything. I once watch a 20 minute fight between two females where it looked like one had been killed. It was evening and I couldn't do anything because of darkness. It all worked out but was difficult to watch.
