Martin Colony History: First pair in 2009 after 28 years of trying. 3 pairs 2010, 17 pairs 2011 and 35-45 pairs since. Many additional colonies are now springing up around mine in an area once completely void of Martins. I offer 50 compartments at my site consisting of primarily Excluder II gourds on Gemini racks. Also a wooden T-14. I utilize electric fence type predator guards on the base of the poles. Supplemental feeding is crucial in maintaining my colony. I platform feed throughout the season as needed. My site tends to be a stop over point for additional birds as they migrate further north.

I was really hoping TN would see it's first arrival late today or early tomorrow but I guess birds will do their thing regardless of what I like to think.

That is fine by me, but I was really hoping one or two would make it in today. Conditions were good.

Maybe I should throw in the towel on my predictions of these great birds we love so much.

But ... That would not be much fun... and there is still a chance one will move in on the 16th in the AM. Right?

Some birds have moved in further to the south today but hmmm. Sorry D'Nese, Stretch, and all those in TN. They surely will begin their arrival soon. Certainly by Sunday.

I think I need A new crystal ball. :cry: This one is getting foggy. :lol:

But... There may still be time to capture one in Texas.... book a flight... let it go in Tennessee. :idea: Nah. :roll:

Supplemental feeding plays a major role in Western Pennsylvania. Finally got my 1st pair in 2009 after 28 years of effort. The colony has grown quickly to 45 pairs that I care for. Many new colonies have now sprung up around me in the past few years as well. Where there was none.... there is many.

We Tennesseans are quite patient!!! Wouldn't want them here when the weather is not favorable to bugs flying around. It's been overcast, cool and rainy so they wouldn't have much to eat in my parts. Can't speak for Linda's area but I'm sure it's not too far off of our weather.
Keep your finders crossed, clean off that crystal ball (no you don't need a new one) and lets see what the next few days have to hold.
I spoke with Linda this past weekend and she and Paul have the welcome mat out!!! All she needs now is to hear that sweet song.

Please pass the hors d'oeuvres, it appears the arrival party has *officially* started in TN.

Currently there are two arrival reports this morning, and I am sure more will be submitted very shortly. Both arrival locations are just north of the southern TN border. Martins should be moving north, making other landlords very happy.

Early this morning while we were watching the starlings invade the magical Melcher NBT, as lovely ASY female arrived at our site. She landed on our large gourd rack and began to investigate a couple of gourds. A short while later she was feeding above the site. Hope she returns later this afternoon or evening and brings some friends.

I want to thank Doug for his arrival predictions and weather updates. He was not too far off target with this one........Thanks, Doug.

Martin Colony History: Started in 2001 with one Chuck Abare style 16 gourds rack. The past several years I have three of these gourd racks now. 48 gourds total. Maybe six plastic and the rest natural. Mixture of vertical, horizontal, single and double gourds. Tunnels on most and all sreh holes. Predator guards(bird netting) on each pole. Also have a S&S repeating trap in area. Shotgun and pellet gun help too. Usually all gourds occupied.

That's great :) I'm ready and waiting up here in NW Tn. It's always a couple days after you all. The weather has been barely in 50's and no bugs on my windshield yet. GL all.

Mike, it should not be too much longer for you and other TN landlords. According to this year's reports once they begin to arrive, they are arriving in good numbers. Time will tell if that holds up for TN.

I checked out Hornbeak on Google maps, and you are located not too far from our friends, Carole & Bob Fornwald, in Walnut Grove, in the NW corner of the state by Reelfoot Lake. They have a lovely colony site and are great landlords. In 2009, their first arrival occurred before ours. Keep your eyes to the skies, it could happen any time now. TN martins seem to be a bit erratic in their anticipated arrival locations and dates. I just think they enjoy surprising us........

I hope you have a wonderful 2012 season.........I will be looking for your arrival report...........YEE HAW! it is now happening in TN.
