Has anyone here seen a Purple Martin drink from a Swimming Pool? The closes pond of water to me is about 300 to 400 yards away. I was just wondering if a Martin would drink from a pool? May or may not like the taste.

They will use pool water for both drinking and splash bathing... hopefully not for diaper disposal too often!

Martin Colony History: First pair in 2009 after 28 years of trying. 3 pairs 2010, 17 pairs 2011 and 35-45 pairs since. Many additional colonies are now springing up around mine in an area once completely void of Martins. I offer 50 compartments at my site consisting of primarily Excluder II gourds on Gemini racks. Also a wooden T-14. I utilize electric fence type predator guards on the base of the poles. Supplemental feeding is crucial in maintaining my colony. I platform feed throughout the season as needed. My site tends to be a stop over point for additional birds as they migrate further north.

Dave,

My housing is around my pool. I had a few Martins that would drink from there. Especially one female all the time.

I also have a few ponds across from me. They would show up all wet from over there. That is where they did most all their drinking and bathing.

A pool is a little small for them. Even mine at 30 ft around. Luckily the poop was not a problem. Grackles are the culprit there for me.

I will have to see what happens with an even larger colony this season. The verdict is still out.

They likely will not view your pool as a water source for their needs. Just as you may not consider a small shed a home. It may serve a purpose in a pinch however.

Doug
Supplemental feeding plays a major role in Western Pennsylvania. Finally got my 1st pair in 2009 after 28 years of effort. The colony has grown quickly to 45 pairs that I care for. Many new colonies have now sprung up around me in the past few years as well. Where there was none.... there is many.

Dave I can tell you that my martins use my pool water all the time !!! It's
Unreal!! They love it !! My wife thinks it's crazy!! But they do!!! We
Sit on patio and watch them swarm over it in mornings and the
Evenings as if to say hello to us !!!!
Good luck this year!

When we had the drought last summer I had a kiddie pool and put a slanted rock in it and the birds would land on the rock and get to the water, they couldn't reach the water from the edge of the pool so the rock was a big hit.

Martin Colony History: Started my Colony in 2008 with 32 gourds and one ASY pair. As of 2017 I had 106 cavities with 106 pair.

Early one season, During a cold stretch of weather, my martins would drink out of a ditch of standing water about 16' long and maybe 6' wide.... I'm guessing to conserve energy, by not making the trip to a larger body of water. So I don't believe drinking out of a pool would be too much of a stretch, even during good weather.

That's neat, Jack - I wonder if they could manuever through a smaller 'pond' - and now you reminded me how we watched martins drink from what were only puddles in the road, during bad weather when they were stressed. Their ability to 'slow-fly' over those puddles, in order to drink, was amazing.

I guess I thought they might drink water from the pool, but my real concern was, what about the chlorine in the water. I know I can't really taste it, but would it be harmful the birds? Sounds to me like it is not a problem for your Martins. Thanks for the information..

Hey Dave, in regard to the bat drinking from the pool .............. after she is through mowing the lawn, cleaning the house, and doing laundry at the least you could do is fix her some lemonade or ice tea('') I sure hope cutting those trees will give your site enough open space this year, good luck and see you on the links,, TG
