I have been enjoying your web cam. Saw two martins sleeping in the nest last night and today there has been one in and out. Also enjoy hearing their sounds as it will still be a while before mine are back. Last year the first Iowa scout report was yesterday on St. Patricks day. This year I thought they would be even earlier with the warm winter and early spring but no one reported any in Iowa yesterday. The martins must just be having too much fun south of here.
Thanks for sharing your birds with the web cam. :!: :!: :!:

Very cool. I bookmarked it! Can't tell which direction they face at night? Always looking out the opening or no?

Hey Randall, is the camera in a multi-room house or a gourd ? It looks like the martins enter and exit easily. What kind of entrance hole is on the cavity ? Is what I see on the camera at the entrance a wing entrapment guard ? Thanks again for hosting the camera as we enjoy checking in.

Edit- I'm guessing it must be a gourd as loud as the rain sounds hitting it tonight.

Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.

As I watched tonight, the female tucked her beak under her wing. Sweet dreams little birdies...

I checked the video a couple of times this afternoon and noticed there must a lot of wind today. Rock-a-bye baby!!

Thank you, Randall! Beautiful!!
Sincerely,
Laverne

Hi everyone. Thank you for the kind comments. The camera this year is mounted in the top of a LoneStar gourd facing straight down. In past years it was mounted to the access lid looking down at about a 45 degree angle which gave a nice view angle but was so close that much of the action was out of frame. At the top of the picture is the edge of the porch, one inside and one outside. They Crescent SREH entrance obviously does not slow them down. We received about 4 inches of rain between 7pm and 10am so they had a lot of camera time,

Well he lost his second friend, back to only two in the gourd tonight. I am not sure but it looked to me like two females with one male last night. It must be cold in Texas as they cuddled together all night.

I wondered if a Hawk may have scared the 3rd one in to the wrong house. It was intent on staying because it was also just about dark.
