Pattern for subbie returns?
Do SY birds follow a similar pattern for their return as ASY birds? That of the males returning ahead of the females? I have just observed the past couple years that male SY's seem to come back first at my colony. Or is it just more SY males that survive to begin with? Any of you veterans observed a pattern?

- Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.
I don't consider myself a "veteran". But, my first bird back this year and last year was a female. So much for that old "myth".
I'm estimating, but about six weeks ago I spotted a female SY at my colony. I didn't report my first SY Male on the Scout Report until yesterday. I think he's been here for a few days, but I could not get a good enough look at him to do a positive identification. And that's the problem...

I can only tell you what happens at my colony. Males usually return first. Had two ASY males on the 28th of March show up and then much to my surprise a SY male on the 30th. Later on when the colony is full of activity, I have plenty of males & females. It's been this way for a couple of years now for me. Hope this helps. Wishing you a great season.
