I hope everyone stays safe. Lower martin housing ahead of severe storms IF there is time to do so - and secure round hubs with duct tape, so house won't spin. Don't lower or raise houses after dark. It's okay to leave houses lowered all night.

Martin Colony History: First started in Gretna, La in 1969 with a small homemade house, have had martins ever since at 2 different homes in Texas

Looks like some damage already, and golf ball sized hail...Farmers Branch, Carrollton, all near Dallas-Ft Worth, etc.

so I would wrap my pole with duct tape, then lower the house onto that taped section?

Prayers and safety to our peeps and Martins in Arlington and The DFW area. Arlington has declared a 7 day emergency. Tornados are bad.
Hope all the folks, their families, and martins bunker down and stay safe and well.

I put up my old Coates in the neighbors yard last year and he didn't have anything to keep the round pole from spinning around inside the ground sleeve during high winds. So I duct-taped the base pole to the ground sleeve to keep it from spinning. If your round poles have safety bolts thru them and/or thumbscrews or whatever to keep the sections from spinning around in high winds, you should be ok. Same goes for round hubs as Louise mentioned - if nothing else keeps them from spinning, you can duct tape them.

Dorn,

lower house, then use duct tape to secure hub or house base to pole, so that rooms are facing the right way - same as when it's raised, so pairs will find the right rooms & contents where they expect them to be. They know their rooms by compass orientation.

Has to be a better way. I will put some thought on it.

These storms are heading towards La. And Ar. Video being shown on the weather channel is impressive with semi trucks being lifted up into the air. Landlords in La and Ar should be lowering their housing now.

Agreed Tim. In the Dallas area, big oaks were ripped from the ground and pushed completely through houses. Thats not easy for a storm to do. I hope you and your Martins are safe Tim. Also Mr Kroenke and his neighbor friend in La who went through this last season.
It does look like The DFW area, north Texas area is the only area hit with tornados at this time. Stay safe Tim.

It's been crazy here in Dallas today.

By the way, I just joined the forum. I just got martins and bluebirds at my new place and hoping they haven't been blown away already. :-(

Thanks for checking Matt, no damage here. I don't recall ever seeing this kind of system in the area before. So many tornados and such large hail.
I hope everyone is OK.

Well, I was at work and heard of the storms, so I called my wife and asked her to lower the house. She said she was in our guest bathroom (which functions as our safe room) with the dog and said, "I hope you don't expect me to risk my life for the birds". Thank the Lord, we didn't get hit. Had lots of new residents after the storms blew through around 7pm. Seemed like they were all worn out wanting a place to bed down for the night!

I got all of my housing lowered just before it hit. I'm glad it wasn't a repeat of yesterday.....BAD STORMS and wing entrapment don't mix anytime!!!
