I just got home from a funeral this morning, heard a familiar sound and looked up. There were dozens! of PM's overhead! There must have been a roost in the area, (Medina County) that decided today was the day. Could it be a co-incidence that they started at the same time of the butterfly migration? 'food on the fly' . For 2 hours I watched them and they are still coming/going.
Really makes me look forward to spring! (My husband has promised me a 2nd T-14).

I still don't know where the roost was, but according to the watch list, there is/was one in Rio Medina, not too far from me. Again today, all day long, they were overhead. Especially in the A.M.
Louis - keep an eye out. It looks like they are heading for Corpus!

Barbara, I haven't been on the Forum for quite a while but decided to check it out. Didn't know where Natalia was but found you are near me just SW of San Antonio (I'm in Canyon Lake 30 min north of San Antonio). I think we are kind of in the no-fly zone as most migration of birds and butterflies (Monarchs) happens either to the east or west of us, thru Kerrville, Fredericksburg and down your way. What a joy for you to see the PMs flying overhead on their journey south!
We were lucky to start a small colony this spring, especially with the 2-year drought taking a toll on PM populations. But we only had four pair, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed they will make it back here next March. I read there is a 50% mortality rate of the birds making their migratory trip to South America and back, so only eight little birdies??? I sure hope they make it...
