A couple of years ago I bought a cheep house from lowes(which has worked) but now I was wanting to upgrade and buy a nice one from this website. I have an established colany but was wanting something built better. Can I just put up a new house with no problem or will my martins be confused or will they just take to the new house. Any info is greatly appreciated. Was wanting to buy the house soon.
Thanks in advance

Yes you can put up a new house with no problem..are
you replacing your old system? If not just put the new upgrade within 10 ft of your existing one and you should be fine. Are you looking at another housing system or a gourd rack? PMCA offers a nice starter rack that you would be happy with, and give your martins a different system to choose from. Good luck with your choice..

I think you have to look more at whether the entrance holes on the new house are different than your old house. Other than that, the martins will probably be very glad for the "upgrade."

Thanks for the input. I am replacing my old house, and was going to go for a trio house. My holes on my old house were round, but I was thinking about putting Serh on the new on. Is this a bad idea?

It's a good Idea to offer the PM's a Option on the entrances because just like us they like Options and not all birds like the same entrances.
The sreh;s are a great Idea and if you don't have any S & S problems Leave up a few Round hole entrances, the Larger Males will thank you for it

Remember that you'll want to modify the compartments to double size, too. Here's one way to do that - http://www.purplemartin.org/update/9%283%29trio.html

new trios have removable door stops that allow you to make expanded compartments without drilling.Louise Chambers wrote:Remember that you'll want to modify the compartments to double size, too. Here's one way to do that - http://www.purplemartin.org/update/9%283%29trio.html

If you are buying new and want the typical "12 opening" style the MSS-12 will be a good choice that allows you to raise and lower with a rope. The MK-12 comes with a cam locking pole that is stronger than the MSS-12 pole but is a huge pain to raise and lower, even for a full grown man like me.aarosport wrote:I was thinking the "grandpa" version. Any suggestions on which one?
Here is a link to the MSS-12 - http://shop.purplemartin.org/Trio_Marti ... tails.aspx
If you like the "castle" look you can go with the "mini castle" but it is more expensive and I don't like the look. To me it looks like the circus is in town. lol

Either way be sure to expand the compartments and put SREH's on it.

Good luck and feel free to post any questions on here. You will become a Trio Jedi as some point. There are many Trio Jedi's on here.

I have a Trensetter 28 and I LOVE it !! I loved it so much I bought another one last year. My colony is growing like crazy, The house is very sturdy, roomy cavities, a porch for each and mesh flooring. It is easy to manage, and the wench is very nice. I am perfectly happy and it also has a cover available to proctect during the winter. I have gourds hanging on one unit.
Robin's Nest for purple martins in memory of Mr. Bands. (Mr. Bands came 2010 from New Jersey as a 2 year old. 2011, he CAME BACK TO US, but found dead inside a cavity at start of 2011 season.) 2010- 53 fledged, 2011- 75 fledged, 2012- 109 fledged. Using 2 28 Trendsetter units.
