When I was taking my gourds down in July last year, I was facing a diagnosis of esophageal cancer. On July 27th, 2 excellent surgeons in Memphis removed 1/3 of my stomach and 1/2 of my esophagus. So in July of last year I was not sure that I would see another season.

Good news I am cancer free, no chemo, no radiation. So this season I cannot wait for this: Image

Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.

Fear not, for I am with you...saw me through alot last year too! Oh, and laughter. That beautiful martin sound is so uplifting. I knew this morning my odds were very good. But, there can be that little what if. So when I was wasting time between appointments I was overjoyed to play Joe's video. That music is my heaven on earth.

I am so happy for you, your family, and all those birds! This forum is also a blessing.

Martin Colony History: Had my site up to 22 gourds of which most (+/-3) stayed occupied.
Downsized to 17 gourds due to back surgeries. Had 14 families in 2017 but did not do nest checks due to health. Feeling better in 2018 and hoping for a good year.

Wow...that is fantastic news. If anything can make you appreciate martins even more...that would be it. Congrats on beating back the big bad C. Hope you have a great martin season!

Excellent news to hear you are cancer free. I have a friend whose wife had a massive stroke and he and his wife have found martins to be a great therapy. He immerses himself in improving his colony and doing modifications on the housing while his wife is able to watch the beautiful flight and songs of the martin.
ImageMite control, heat venting, predator protection and additional feeding during bad weather add up to success.
