A question for all you veteran landlords,
How unusual is it for the sub adults to be soooo late? I've pretty much given up on getting any adults, so my hopes are now invested in the rabble rouser adolescents.
Dave
Where are the subbies?

This morning I saw my first SY, it was a female so I can't submit to the scout report. I don't know about Iowa but that time frame is right on schedule for Delaware.

I care for a 6 condo Sunset House as well as two Deluxe Gourd Racks, with 24 Chirpynest/Excluder gourds, along a canal in Pompano Beach, Florida.
At Quiet Waters Park, nearby in Deerfield Beach, I care for a Deluxe Gourd Rack with 12 TVG's. I also care for a Deluxe Gourd rack with 12 Excluder gourds with Modified Excluder entrances. I am substituting 6 Chirpynest boxes for 6 of the Conley II entranced gourds in 2026.
At another local park, Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek, I care for a Trendsetter 12, 5 gourds rack with 60 Excluder gourds with Modified Excluder Entrances and 1 Deluxe Gourd Rack with 12 Troyer Vertical Gourds with Starling Stoppers over the Conley II's to keep out smaller starlings.
I find that they usually show up about the time the ASY's have been here for a month and when the ASY's are beginning to make nests.

For those following my site progress my backyard site appears to be nearly full up. That would be 36 pairs.
My DE Country Club site appears nearly full up too. That would total 10 pairs.
My DE marina site has two pairs and a third lone ASY male. That site can accommodate 14 pairs. Last year was the first year, after trying for four years, to get nesting pairs. It had two pairs and both pairs were successful.

I'm in southeast Iowa, and I haven't seen any SY martins yet either. But my one returning male is in hyperdrive looking for some. Or for ANY kind of martin to share the whole big housing development with. I hope he finds company. And that you catch some nesting pairs this season.

This has been an unusual season for me. My first scouts were seen Feb 6th, the earliest I have ever seen scouts. The sub adult birds started to arrive in the last two weeks. I even got some new birds this weekend so there is plenty of time left for arrivals in this season.

Sub males arrive in St. Louis about May 1 and pour in first few weeks of May, so not late in Iowa.
I think fledgling success was lowered last season here overall by the extreme heat and may be fewer sub adults, but there usually are many extras that hang out and don't nest, so may not notice.
