DornCounty :

I finally pulled myself away from the large picture window facing my site where several martins have visited this Mother's Day morning. ONE subbie has been here for seveal hours gliding over my site on this windy day. This martin finally landed on the Trio House that is NOT converted and even went in to investigate. He also landed on the gourds that I have below on my multi-purpose pole that has the other two Trio Houses. He flew constantly for several hours and finally landed. Thanks for posting your greeting to me of " great news " !

I wanted to respond to your posting after reading it. There may be a few things to try with the starlings, like trapping them in a starling trap if you have one or possibly closing off the cavities on the back side of the T-14. However, if you close them off in the back the starlings may then decide to come on the side where your martins are. You may choose to do NOTHING at the present time until your FIRST pair get settled in and are established at your site. Sometimes doing nothing is better than making a change, especially when they first arrive !

Mike in NC : POST of : " To those waiting for birds "

I read your recent post on the Forum " To those waiting for birds " and wanted to address what Mike said, regarding leaving your gourd racks and houses up after the martins leave. This is a very good point ! New martins and martins from other colonies can view these sites, coming from nearby colonies and colonies far away on their way back to Brazil. I have done this for the long time that I have been trying to get martins at my site. It is one more thing to offer that may bring that FIRST pair to come and STAY the following year !!!

baileysambone :

Enjoyed receiving your posting this morning. Our FIRST subbbie visitors came last Friday ( May 10 ) and landed in my nesting tray around 4:30 p.m. It was a pair of sub-adults. Saturday was not a pretty day with showers and it was chilly, but our first one of the morning flew over my site for nearly 3 hours constantly, until it decided to land and investigate my houses and gourd racks. All this week many have been visiting everday, UNTIL yesterday. One group of 6 came in and did a fly-over in the late afternoon yesterday and then a group of 3 did the same. They did not land. Other then theses 2 groups, I did not see hardly any martins yesterday THEN this morning, I only spotted 1 that did a fly-over and did not land either. I do not know what is happening, but the same birds that were here all the time in the beginning, either are not returning or returning with other Bachelor males that have grouped up and may be going to several of the large colonies that are very close to my site. MANY , MANY VISITORS for nearly a week, and I am now asking myself, WHY and WHERE DID THEY GO ??? HOPEFULLY, this is only temporary, but it was 80 degrees here yesterday and around 80 degrees today. HOPEFULLY, they will back for MANY returning visits over this weekend. Right now I do not know what to think, when everything started out so well last Friday. I will continue to keep a good eyes to the sky and keep a constant look out my large picture that faces my colony. At this moment, I continue to be . . . . . .

I thought I would send a posting out to " ALL " of you, regarding what I observed at my site Friday, Saturday and this morning. I have not monitored my site constantly for the past few days, but I have been in and out and have been watching from the large window facing my colony. I have seen NO investigating martins what so ever or any making daily visits like they had been. The past several days has not been very pretty but the temperatures have been in the 80's.

I realize that the subbies recently arrived in my area and at times they may come and go when first arriving, but I feel that 3 days of them not visiting is a bit odd. Possibly, they may be at the several large colonies that are very close to my site. ANY IDEAS :?:

Nice to hear back from you again. YES, YES, and YES . . . . . . I would really love to get them to come to my site and STAY !!! After 10 LONG years, I am still waiting and will continue to wait for as long as I have to. After 10 LONG years, I would NEVER consider giving up now !!! My efforts would have been for nothing, if I were ever to give up and throw in the towel now. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER will I give up. I will continue to patiently wait and they WILL come !!! Until that time comes, I will continue to be . . . . . .

What is your opinion as to the next influx of subbies headed north into Maryland and Pennsylvania ??? I would think that there will be another BIG wave migrating this way in the very near future. As ever, I continue to be . . . . . .

First let me say I admire your resolution. I am a wanna be for this the second year and trying to learn everything I can. Your post has generated a ton of response which is good. For my question, may have already been asked if it was I missed it, yes I have decoys but only two. Since martins are community birds in your opinion would lots of decoys make any difference? Wondering.

Thanks for your post this morning, regarding my opinion on decoys. I also have ONLY 2 decoys on just one of my racks. I have three other racks, which I have NOT put decoys on. My personal opinion, is that this is enough decoys, as the martins will immediately see these decoys when they arrive. Too many decoys may hurt, rather than help, especially when you consider how smart martins are. They would really think it strange to see TOO MANY decoys and no live martins. 2 decoys LOOKS NORMAL, compared to putting up TOO MANY !!! For now, I continue to be . . . . . .

Just wondering, if those of you that have large colonies . . . how do YOU compare the number of subbies so far this year, as compared to this time last year ??? Many of those in my area that I have talked to, are of the opinion that the subbies have NOT arrived in great numbers in my area as of yet. Are they arriving much later this year or has the " BIG INFLUX " not migrated up into Maryland and Pennsylvania yet ? With the clock ticking and getting near the end of May, could the " BIG INFLUX " be running days or even weeks late ? Presently, I continue to be . . . . . .

The time seems to have arrived for another wave of SUBBIES this week into next week. Hopefully, it will be a " BIG " influx with good weather and a warm southerly flow to bring them to those of us who have been patiently waiting for more arrivals ! PATIENCE, PATIENCE, PATIENCE and THEY WILL COME and hopefully, STAY !!! For now, I continue to be . . . . .

It has been awhile since I made a posting on the Forum. I wanted to let you folks know that it has been extremely quiet at my site. There has been an occasional SUBBIE or two making a quick visit, but other than that, I have seen very few subbies this year ! WHERE ARE THEY ???????
I continue to be . . . . . .

Just a brief update on this morning. 2 SUBBIE'S arrived around 6:30 a.m. this morning and investigated my site. After 20 minutes or so, 1 left, but the other martin stayed until around 10:30 a.m. Hope I will see them both tomorrow ! For now, I continue to be . . . . . .

There is some really good advice in this thread for the very experienced and inexperienced alike. I think natural gourds may be your best chance at finally getting some Martins. What are the established colonies using around you? Although you have a lot of expense in your plastic gourds it may be worth it to go all natural one season and see what happens. I have talked to several "oldtimers" in my area and two of the non-conventional attractors that they mentioned to me, that I have not seen in this thread were 1) clothes hanging on a line and 2) children playing nearby. I know these are definantly not "scientific" in terms of proven methods but it may offer some sort of sense of protection to our friend, the Purple Martin, that may just get you your first established pair. You will get your colony going soon enough. I hope this helps and keep looking up! GOOD LUCK!

Thank you for your post on the Forum. I wanted to respond back to you, regarding natural gourds. I have offered them at my site over the past years, without much interest. Most of the large colonies in my area that are very close to me are offering Super Gourds with ROUND holes. I have never been too excited with these gourds, as they do attract starlings and sparrows. I mostly offer Troyer Horizontal and Troyer Vertical Gourds and Excluder Gourds. They are great gourds and offer a great deal of protection for the martins. Regarding the clothes line and children nearby, I have neither. However, I do have many people coming and going at the property next to my site. They are constantly watching for martins, as they come and go all day long, everyday. I have begun to see more SUBBIE'S at my site in the past several days. Hopefully, this will continue. I do know that these subbie's are a lot more inexperienced than the ASY'S, making it more difficult to get them to come and STAY ! As far as THIS YEAR is concerned, it's NOT over until it's over !!!!!!! As for right now, I continue to be . . . . . .

Gosh darnit...I cannot believe you did not get any birds to stay with all those visitors. What a bunch of teases! I'm glad you are still seeing SY's migrating into your area. I sure hope you have luck getting a couple pairs to stay. Good luck! I am really hoping for the best.
