Took a picture of this cute pair. A few years ago I had a several nests around my place, now it's down to only one nest each year.

Love them! They toyed with us a bit the past two years but couldn't find an underhang good enough on our house lol. I'm thinking about building one of those ledges for them. Who knows what'll happen. :-)

- Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.
I love em too! Like you our numbers seem a little down the past couple of years. But this year we have three pair zipping all over. I like the male's song. A faster quieter version of the male purple martin ending with kriek kriek kriek.
Excellent photo with great clarity.

Might want to put up some of these artificial nest cups in overhang locations

I have had several up for several years with no takers, though.
There was a very active colony in and around the abandoned house we bought. When we re-did the house in 2003 the barnies fled and unfortunately haven't re-established themselves.

Great photo Ray!
I wonder of all the Swallows, how many species' males have songs that end with that signature "kriek", like the Martins and Barnies.....
Isn't that amazing!!!!DebA wrote:A faster quieter version of the male purple martin ending with kriek kriek kriek.

@ Curt... Yeah! That's the one. I'm thinking of putting some up around the porches on our house because they would roost there when first getting back.

Very nice Photo, I'm a big fan of the barn swallow, sure wish I could attract a pair or two, to my place! I moved a tree swallow house out into the garden this year, in hopes they would not chase the barn swallows away from the ledge's I put up on my shop for the barnies.
Thanks for sharing this photo of your pair really nice.

- Martin Colony History: Had a colony many years ago which dwindled over a couple of years and then did not return. Kept trying each year for almost 20 years and finally had a small success in 2011 with two pairs nesting. Colony has grown slowly each year with 22 pairs in 2015. In 2016 my gourd rack of 18 gourds filled up so I added 4 more gourds and then put up a small rack of 6 gourds. All of those were claimed within a few days so I believe I have at least 25 pairs this year.
Beautiful photo Ray. I have several flying around the yard every day but not sure where they are nesting. Thanks for sharing.
