- Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.
WTH? Sorry that was the first thing I thought! Now to more socially acceptable thoughts...that is great! Amazing jump in numbers!! So how many nests do you have now? Congrats! You must be smiling.

- Martin Colony History: Taking care of 11 active public colonies and trying to start two more in northwestern PA. Also attempting to restart another one in southwestern PA, in Collier Township's Hilltop Park. In 2017, not sure what happened but the ASY male returned and then a couple of weeks later he was gone. It could have been weather related. No other birds showed up. I had a starling nesting at the Public site that I had trouble getting rid of.
In 2018, we fledged 629 martins at all of the sites.
Terry,
That's great to hear. What a jump in your colony. Remember how nice it was with one pair, to be able to tell the birds apart. Now it's a little more difficult, what do you think?
Is your original male or female still coming back, or is that hard to tell?
Hope you have another good season.

WTH? is about rite. I have 92 cavities, 2 T-14s with 4 gourds under each one ane 3 gourd racks. If I weren't computer stupid I would love to put some pictures up, oh well. There are so many birds I can't tell if the original birds are still here or not. I am mentoring another neighbor and he has 3 pair this year so he has his colony started. DEAR DAVE I wish you had some purple birds! Good luck Bill and Deb..........well, to all PM lovers, wherever you are. Terry
terry are you in orient ?are you up the road from w.c.h? I talked to someone on here last year that was close to me. just wondered if it was you? well last year I had a jump in numbers I got double the adult birds I was expecting back last year. and this year I had 14 more adult birds then what I was expecting. I have 70 cavities all are full except for 3. last nest check 218 eggs. but not all was done or started so checking again today. seems to be a good martin year here. but I am having a bad ts year. one pair my five year old broke the eggs. they moved to another box I just put up. with know predator guard. and last night a coon got those eggs. I am heart broken. goes to show you think it wont happen but it can. you cant go one night with out something on a pole. I do not know if they will lay more eggs. they are still here going box to box. bothering ts young that are about to fledge out of the box. well we will see.

Terry -- Thanks for allowing me to help with the nest checks. You know me, I love the birds. (For some one who doesn't have birds, this is the best way to keep your hopes up, visit a good friend with birds.)
Thanks again Terry.
