I couldn't wait, so did nest checks today, looks like 2 for sure, maybe 3, and 5 gourds total show some activity :-).

This is the first one I saw them going into and out of for sure, so I numbered it 1

This one here showed some activity last week and it is actually further along.

This one is a maybe.....we'll see, nice fresh green leaves though :-).

Like another new landlord said it was like a switch got flipped. They went from from "hanging around" to "going to town" in literally one week.

Here is a front shot of the most active one for any hopeful landlords, the mud around the opening is a dead giveaway :-)...

Looks like one other pair maybe working on a too.

The TRES have babies in their own housing about 75 feet away.

Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.

You are doing great, Bill! Just saying hi and I am glad you are getting some residents!

pine needles are great also, however you have the start of the nest. When you see leaves in there you will definately know. I have some nests where they actually never reached the leaf stage. Goodluck fellow buckeye

(4) eggs today in the one nest :-).

I am pretty certain that pair is both ASY. There are some other PM's "messing around" and starting to build nests but not getting serious, they may be SY ?? I know they ARRIVE later than the ASY, but how much is their nest building typically delayed ??

Some of the gourds where they are "screwing around" :-) resemble the SY nest pictures in this FAQ...not a lot of nest material but still a few green leaves.

http://purplemartin.org/update/NestID.pdf

I did try some cedar shavings (maybe people no longer use them, I used to see them mentioned in years past?) but the ASY picked a gourd with nothing in it.

Looks like the first clutch is 4 eggs :-).

Online PMW says
6-23-13 earliest hatch and 7-19-13 earliest fledge.

Somehow I lost all my info I had entered in the online PMW file. Should have printed it :-(. But as I recall it said 6-26 as projected first hatch.

The YELLOW leaves are kind of interesting, they can only be from one bush in our yard, which is a "privet" and it is clear on the other side of the house from the PM condo's....but they all clearly have a preference for leaves from that bush for some reason.

This is not my bush, but it is a similar species

Yea! You are on your way. Did you get any predator guard up? We had our first snake in netting on our pole this morning.
Good luck!

I have to admit that I have not......need to dig up exactly what to buy and where...there was a decent sticky on it...but I was not "getting" exactly the material to use.

I re-vamped my snake netting. Tired of having it come loose and wasting time re-doing it with every nest check.

Get you some "bird netting" in the Garden Center at Lowes or similar store. Get the standard size pkg. It is I think 1/2" x 1/2"squares, black nylon or something. Get some zip ties and twisty ties.

Now this is what I did, and I am by no means an expert.... I stretched mine out in the garage out of the wind. Anchor the ends down. Then loosely roll in big loops or fan fold. Pit a few twisty ties in near your "top" edge to hold inplace. My folds were about 2ft deep. Then I took the zip ties and wove thru the stuff, about 6" down from the top of the folds. tighten the zip ties and you have something that looks like a tutu or a square dancer's petticoat. I put enough gathers in so there was enough to go around my pole with a little overlap. Go to your pole and use a step stool or something so you can mount it above your 8" (minimum) stovepipe predator guard (which you should have if there is ANY chance of raccoons) Wrapped it around for a preliminary fit, then took a final zip tie and wove thru the overlap. More twisty ties to secure the overlap edge, and shore up any flyaways. I thought mine would stay up with just the snug zip ties, but it looks like I will have to put a bungee under it for a "stop", or cinch it around the "waist".

Like everybody has said, if you go to all the trouble to put up housing and are lucky enough to have Purple Martins, you have to finish the job by protecting them from snakes, coons, S&S. I believe this to be true!
