I did a nest check today. My 4 babies should be 19 days old. One was dead and it looked like the parents tried to get it out but only made it to the tunnel. It had been dead several days, probably died right after my last nest check. I put sevin in there right after they hatched so I didn't see anything crawling in there. Should I do a nest change?

By the way, I only have ONE pair. They lost the first set of eggs to cold weather and this is a renest.

Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.

Exact same thing here with a dead little one. I did not do nest change. My surviving three have been great since.

Good luck to your others. I believe in flukes and wounds we cannot always see.
