I'm thinking about trying some Troyer horizontal gourds. I noticed the PMCA shop sells them with either a round or Conley entrance. I only have experience with crescent. However, I thought I'd read that the Excluder II seem to be having good results. Does anyone make a Troyer with an Excluder or crescent entrance? What are the opinions on the Conley entrances?

Chris

My Martins really like the Troyer Horizontal Gourds, they are always the first chosen and the most used. This year I offered 12 THGs, 8 TVGs and a T-14, all with Conley II tunneled entrances. Eleven of the THGs , two TVGs and seven T-14 cavities had nests in them. The only thing that I would recommend is to add two PVC elbows placed as high as possible on the back of the gourds for ventilation. As far as the Conley II entrances go is the starlings can breech them. I have seen them do it but not at my colony. I have the S&S Controller (starling trap) and after they try to get into the gourds or house with SREH, they are attracted to the Controller with the round hole and no more starling. I think a lot of folks are starting to install the Excluder II plates over the Conley II openings and are having better luck keeping the starlings out. I think you might need to trim the opening a bit to make the Excluder plates work.

Thanks for that info! I was at a friend's tonight looking at his Troyers and noticed the PVC vent pipes. I plan to have an S&S trap up by next season. I think I'll get a few to try out. I didn't realize I could put an excluder plate over the conley. I'll look into that. Thanks again.

Chris,
I hung 12 THG's this year and all of them had nesting pairs in them. The PM's love them, and I love them too. The orientation of the clean-out hole makes for VERY EASY nest checks. As the u.v. rays and time take their toll on my Big-Bo gourds, I will replace them with THG's.

"Lewis" in Georgia reported good success by putting the PMCA wing protector on the outside, and raising the porch level too. It may be an alternative to plating over the entrance -- something to try anyway that can be reversed. John M

Always the first gourds picked at my site. BUT, they are very proud of them (price) to high. Wish I could put up more just don't have the $$$..

Later, Patrick in Sugar Land

As usual you get what you pay for. The THGs are the same price as other quality gourds like the Excluders and Super Gourds. They should last many years without having to replace them.
