Now that the season is over some of you may have a special memory or story to share of an event during the season that stands out. Here is mine:
A senior citizen and former martin landlord read an article in our local paper featuring my purple martin colony; he now resides in an assisted living complex. The article bought back old memories of by gone days with his own martins. He organized a bus trip to my place so his co -residents could see an active martin colony. The bus load of resident’s arrived on a Sunday afternoon and it just so happened at that time I had a group of rehab martins I could hand feed so I gave a demonstration of the feeding and briefed them on martins. The feeding was a big hit, especially with the little old lady’s when the young birds opened up for crickets. Some of the residents took turns holding a martin while it took a cricket. The very next day on Monday another bus load of resident’s arrived to see my colony and I gave another feeding demonstration. A few days later the former landlord arrived at my place with one of the caretakers to view some very busy martin activity at roost time. This former landlord is nearly 100 and still loves Martins!

It is great that you and your colony had the opportunity to enrich those folk's lives.

Hey Ray,

Thank you for sharing this martin season highlight with us! I am sure those folks enjoyed themselves!

Bob and I have a satellite martin colony at a retirement home. The senior citizens thoroughly enjoy watching the martins.

Thanks again.

I personally had an amazing "martin year"...... Not sure how I can top it.

Home Colony - reached full capacity in my 2nd year. 16 pairs.

Public Colony -
.........Raised $9,000 to upgrade and repair the Parsons Colony
.........Appeared at 4 public events promoting Purple Martins
.........Had 3 newspaper articles written about our project
.........Appeared on the 6 & 10 PM news on KODE Joplin, MO speaking about our martin project.
.........Got to meet many amazing landlords including several message board members from here.
.........Repaired and upgraded 5 houses
.........Installed 2 new houses
.........Trapped probably 250+ sparrows

Other -
...... Got to view the Tulsa Martin pre-migratory roost site... Amazing even though I got pooped on. haha. Met Dick Sherry here.
...... Mentored 4 landlords to various degrees of success.

Dorn, those are some amazing accomplishments, something you can be very proud of. How did you manage to trap so many sparrows? My count was 27 and I thought I was doing something

40 houses spread across town. could have been twice that many had I had the time. ugh. I would guess my town has 50,000 house sparrows in residence. Spar-o-doors put on Trio compartments the sparrows claim, come back in 5mins to an hour and boom. Rinse and repeat.

Martin Colony History: Had a colony many years ago which dwindled over a couple of years and then did not return. Kept trying each year for almost 20 years and finally had a small success in 2011 with two pairs nesting. Colony has grown slowly each year with 22 pairs in 2015. In 2016 my gourd rack of 18 gourds filled up so I added 4 more gourds and then put up a small rack of 6 gourds. All of those were claimed within a few days so I believe I have at least 25 pairs this year.

Wonderful story and memory for your 2013 season Ray! I know you brought smiles to many visitors and they will remember their time with your martin colony for many years. That is another perfect picture too! :)

Martin Colony History: 22 year landlord, 14 at current residence..offering 9 racks and a homemade T-8 for 166 total cavities. 160 Pair in 2018 Racks consist of a Deluxe 12, AAA 16, Starburst 16, 2 K-18 Series, Super 24, 2 Gemini, Multi-purpose/two trio’s/4gourds and a T-8..Great hobby to be involved in..

Amazing story Ray!! I guess my highlight was saving my early arrivals in March after a snow storm and cold temps for several days. Supplemental feeding and having a very hungry female fly up to me and land on my hat and take crickets from my hand, my wife taking a photo of it and Louise publishing it in the Update...and having a very successful season afterwards!! :)

I love the photo Ray!

Someday I will be in an assisted living facility and hope to have someone take me to see a colony.

This is why I have a colony, for future generations to enjoy, plus I am adding more room and accessories to help our beloved martins thrive. It is a wonderful feeling knowing I am making a difference in the lives of our elders, my neighbors, our children, and especially the Purple Martins.
Thanks to all who work so hard to bring such fun, companionship, and interest in this marvel of nature to all of us.
